Ted Kennedy and John Kerry are filibustering again.

With all of the hot air there you would think that they could blow out the fire.

Fire officials have announced they'll let it burn. Too dangerous to the personnel to fight it. This suggests that there may be a lucrative market for a remote-control hose dragger.

Incredible.
You'd think that with all the brain power of MIT, Harvard, BU, and Route 128,
there would be some sort of robotic carriage unit that could carry hoses into an area and
suppress a fire without risking human life.
I hate to be cynical, but I wonder if some officials of the firefighter assoications
(unions) might either fear or not understand the utility of such a thing.

Automated robots for firefighting have been available for about 50 years. They look like little bulldozers and trail water hoses. Nozzles all over. Much cheaper to lose than a person.
Of course these are opposed by the bureaucrats.

Exactly..... I remember one rig over at Sandia National Labs in NM that was pulling a water tanker with a old M113 APC that had a water cannon mounted on it . All was done remotely.
Seemed to be a very useful tool for just such a fire. I think they were developing it for forest and large city fires ect ect but hey it'd work here very well IMHO.
Stay Safe !

That much wouldn't rate a good bang. You don't REALLY beleive that 4500lbs of ammoninum nitrate took down the Murrah building, do you?

The smoke keeps changing from black to light grey. I sure don't like the looks of it.

http://www.boston.com/news/daily/07/quincy_fire.htm BOSTON -- A warehouse in Quincy that reportedly contains some six tons of fertilizer is on fire. Smoke from the blaze is visible for several miles.
The building is located on Ricciuti Drive in the Quarry Hills section of Quincy, near a new golf course under construction.
Fire officials reportedly are letting the fire burn itself out because they fear an explosion might result if water was poured onto the blaze.
Police have set up road blocks in the area. No one is being allowed within 500 feet of the blazing structure.
Several cable television networks are broadcasting live helicopter coverage of the fire.
There are news reports that the Southeast Expressway might have to be shut down because of smoke from the blaze.
In addition to the fertilizer, the 75-foot by 90-foot building is reported to contain some equipment as well fuel oils, plastics, and gasoline.

I remember a chlorine factory fire here about ten years ago. Very nasty. The first guys on the scene sprayed it with water.
(( A big Homer Simpson "Doh"))
It was fun to watch for a couple of days, then it got boring.
