Ex-president Bill Clinton's bombshell announcement before a Canadian Jewish group earlier this week that he was prepared to "grab a rifle and get in the trench and fight and die" for Israel isn't the first time a Clinton has offered to don combat fatigues.
Twenty-seven years before Mr. Clinton pledged to go to war, his wife Hillary tried to join the Marines, a move prompted by the former first couple's "love" of the military, the duo claimed in 1994.
Clinton has so far declined to elaborate on his pledge to go to war for Israel. The New York Post, which front paged the story under the headline "GI Bill" on Friday after NewsMax.com reported the Clinton quote two days earlier, said the would-be warrior was flying to Aspen, Colo., yesterday and couldn't be reached for comment.
But when the one-time Vietnam War-era draft dodger made the bizarre promise to "fight and die," he was actually following in the footsteps of his wife, who revealed she was prepared to go to war herself as Vietnam wound down.
"Gee, now it was probably 19 years ago--1975," Hillary told a network TV interviewer in June 1994, according to a transcript of her comments as they were rebroadcast on the old Rush Limbaugh TV show.
"I decided that I was very interested in having some experience in serving in some capacity in the military," she explained.
Her husband then interjected helpfully, "Because we all love the military so much."
Mrs. Clinton proceeded to detail the story of the day she tried to enlist:
"So I walked into our local recruiting office, and I think it was just my bad luck that the person who happened to be there on duty could not have been older than 21, was in perfect physical shape.
"So I sat down and I said, you know, I wanted to explore. I didn't know whether I thought active duty would be a good idea, reserve--you know, maybe National Guard, something along those lines.
"I was already a lawyer. I thought there were some roles I could perform, and I was going on and on, you know, trying to justify my existence. And this young man looked at me and he said, 'How old are you?'
"I said, Well, 27."
Hillary then described his reaction:
"He looked at me, and in those days that was before I learned how to wear contact lenses. I had these really thick glasses on.
"He said, 'How bad's your eyesight?' I said, 'It's pretty bad'.... And he said, 'How bad?' So I told him. He said, 'That's pretty bad.'
"And he finally said to me--he said, 'You're too old. You can't see. And you're a woman.' And then he went on--and since this is the birthday of the Army, I will tell you what the rest that he said was--this man--young man was a Marine. He said, 'But maybe the dogs would take you.'"
The former first lady says she then thought, "This is not a very encouraging conversation, so maybe I'll look for another way to serve my country."
Thank yew! Thank yew very much!
:-)
Makes sense. I mean, she is a female dog, right? What is it they call those?
I think the recruiter CALLED her a dog.
Womyn
She also claimed to be named for Sir Edmund Hillary.
I seriously wonder if the evil sinator has ever told the truth.
What the hell did that pig expect, a donut munching cop?
