You're going to start a petroleum industry? Cool! (Just Kidding Around) Seriously, what part of the industry?

Hmmm... I can't think of anything at the moment. Good Luck to you. Keep the prices "conservative" and I'll drop by.

If you want to know the nuts and bolts contact your state revenue agency. They will load you up with tax tables, personnel requirements, etc.

I am an entrepreneur, middle of my fourth year. Highly recommend it.
Here are a few reading suggestions, look at Amazon reviews for each of them to get more details. I think all of these are great and should be absorbed by everyone:
1. "Think & Grow Rich" - by Napoleon Hill
2. "Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell
3. "How to Write A Good Advertisement" by Victor O. Schwab
4. "The Ultimate Marketing Plan" by Dan Kennedy
5. "Positioning" by Ries & Trout
6. "The E-Myth" by Michael Gerber (I like the original but the E-Myth Revisited is OK too if you can't find the original)
7. "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand (fiction, but every business owner should have read this book, the 12 hour audiotape version is acceptable substitute)
As a business owner, the most important skill that you have to develop is the marketing skills. You must think of yourself as a marketer of gas and convenience items, and constantly work to 1) keep existing customers coming back more often, 2) get existing customers to buy more per time, 3) get existing customers to refer new customers.
My recommended books #3,4,5, 6 will give you the proper marketing mindset-- that is essential.
#1 will reveal a secret that will help guarantee your success if followed.
#2 and #7 will show you what you are up against.

The Great Game of Business by Jack Stack

Order a free copy of the quickbooks CD and then let it lead you through the set up procedure. Quickbooks is a good accounting software package and the help sections and the setup procedure combined will give you lots of places to scratch your noggin wondering how your business needs to respond to the question.
It has presetup accounts for several different types of businesses that narrows down the setup some, but even after you have selected Retail/convenience store it will give you a good mental workout.
Don't take it too serious the first or even second time through. If you screwup and can't fixit....throw it away and start over.
I don't have the URL but a google search should turn it up.
