SACRAMENTO - Republican Bill Simon mishandled the release of his tax returns Monday but likely will be able to put the issue behind him and campaign more aggressively, analysts said Tuesday.

Political experts, both Democrats and Republicans, said they were astonished at how the gubernatorial candidate bungled what should have been a positive story for the campaign: the unearthing of 11 years worth of returns showing Simon has paid plenty of taxes and donated generously to charities.

At least we don't have to hear Gray Doofus caterwaul about Bill Simon not releasing his tax returns. Now Davis will have to talk about real issues.

"Now Davis will have to talk about real issues."

Fat chance. Just watch: another attack on Simon will come. That's all Grayout has...

True. That's all Davis has -- attacks. He can't talk about his own records, because it's a failure.

I just don't think that someone can win an election solely focusing on negative attacks on his opponent. Eventually, people are going to say, OK, fine, but what have YOU done in the last four years?

Gave us a $24 billion deficit because of your wild spending spree?

Gave us an energy crisis because you were too busy fundraising?

Took away our choice on what car to drive?

Neglected our water supplies, struggling farmers, and gridlocked roads?

Increased spending on mass transportation that no one uses, while declaring that the era of the car is over?

Sold your signature or veto to big business and political cronies?

Davis is corrupt. He cares about no one but himself, and nothing but winning. Simon is going to be in for the ride of his life, and it will be a bumpy ride. But if he can hang on and steer the course and not get side-tracked like he almost did on the tax return matter, I think that Davis will crash and burn, and Simon will be the victor with 49% on November 5th.

Go Simon! Keep the faith!

Yep. Simon can and will win with turnout, turnout, turnout. Grayout does not motivate anyone, he will rely on those that can be rewarded with our tax dollars. Even then, he has problems (See poll w/in Teacher's union). GoSimonGo...

"He's either an incompetent businessman or he is using creative methods to evade taxes," Salazar said.

Gee, I thought he was talking about Governor Davis' junk bond issue to pay for all that electricity he bought us.

Simon should do his own ad that is a 100% parody of the Davis ads. Substitute the (misleading) figures about the millions paid by taxpayers in the S&L with the billions Davis poured down the gurgler with the energy debacle -- which is going to be footed by the taxpayer.

Not a bad idea. I saw on the 'net some of Simon's humorous "attack" ads on Grayout's fundraising and I thought they were great. A parody could the ads that Grayout has spent big $$ on would be neat and could reap some benefits..

You hit the nail on the head: we need to mobilize conservatives and others to get out and vote, and oppress the ideological liberals who don't like Davis' shenanigans. The hardcore union-type Democrats and hand-out voters will still go out and vote for Davis.

Go Simon!

Found something else that may be worthy of its own post, it's about a Howard Jarvis Ass'n complaint from SFGate.com about tax money being used in the campaign. Click Here...

What audit? There's no mention in the article of an audit.

Don't know why they used the title word "Audit" other than is an "IN" word now and probably connotes a connection with Enron, Arthur Andersen and other unsavory companies.
