Not only does the fetus have a top and bottom, but a left and right and a front and back as well. Asymmetry in 3 planes. How does the developing embryo know which way is which? Why do not 50% of individuals have their hearts to the right of midline instead of the left?

One of my embryology professors believed that this was proof enough for him of the existence of God. I already believed in God, but I gladly took this as a wonderful manifestation of His presence in our lives.

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mothers' womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
Psalm 139:13-16

Ah, science finally catches up to scripture!

What is clear is that developmental biologists will no longer dismiss early mammalian embryos as featureless bundles of cells - and that leaves them with some work to do."

I'm a little suprised that they this information wasn't suppressed. It will be very interesting to see how NARAL explains this away.

"Rather than being a naive sphere, it seems that a newly fertilized egg has a defined top-bottom axis that sets up the equivalent axis in the future embryo,"

Could someone explain for me what distinction Nature has made between a "future embryo" and an "embryo"?

By way of a bump for this excellent article I would like to ask that you pray for the repose of the soul of my brother, Daniel Michael Martin, who entered eternity on 7/14/02 ... losing his seven year long, continuous battle against cancer. He died, two weeks short to the day... of the first anniversary of our Mom's entering Eternity.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds like it's been a tough year for you. I will keep him and the rest of the family in my prayers.

I think the distinction is between a newly fertilized egg, called a blastocyst, and the later, more developed embryo.
