As I was pulling into the driveway after running errands this morning, I just heard the news on the local all-news, all-the-time radio station in Chicago, that there's been an explosion at the water filtration plant in Chicago, and that many emergency vehicles were being dispatched to the site. Nothing more at this immediate time, but it's being treated as a very serious event.

FYI: If this turns out to be linked to a terrorist cell- this type of attack is known as "Disruptive Terrorism."
To: Destructor
Does that mean that Tom Daschle is the leader of a disruptive terrorist cell?

"Technically speaking, an OSHA inspection is automatic if 3 or more employees are hospitalized or if there is a fatality, but with this publicity, they should make sure their OSHA log is up to date and get ready for an inspection"...Which, as we all know, will not get them out of paying at least $75,000 in fines, even if everything IS up to specs and the accident was pure worker stupidity. OSHA has EXPENSES to pay for, after all.

Good for him. I took the NFQT and scored 95, but thanks to my being a bad boy when I was 16, I was unable to get a waiver to enter the program. They did grant me a waiver for a 5 year enlistment as an AT which gave me E-4 out of 'A' school, so I was still able to make E-5 in under 2 years which was nice. But none of those large bonuses that the nukes get.
You have a lot to be proud of. :)

Well, water doesn't blow up all the time, but water treatment plants do have problems with methane, natural gas from water wells, and other chemicals which do blow up.
A water treatment facility that had just gone online blew up a few years back, taking out a lot of people who were touring the new facility. The methane in the rocks which lined the water pipe/tunnel inlet was getting disolved in the water and released in the plant. A smoker lit up and kapow, the whole facility went up.
So yes they do have a 'go-boom' prolem with water plants. Well known risk.

He says a contractor working with a torch apparently ignited propane and caused an explosion. That worker and another have been taken to a hospital, both with minor injuries. Rats! Another perfectly good, paranoid ranting, "we're all gonna die", the gubmints lying to us thread shot to hell.
Oh well, catch y'all at the next disaster.

IF water now blows up, this is going to provide a real problem for us "shower takers" during airport threads..There is a way water can "blow up," in a sense. You can even try it out from the comfort of your own home, if you have a microwave oven, a really smooth glass container, and the desire to cover your face and arms in second- and third-degree burns.

He just got confused. For his next stunt, he will be putting some radioactive contamination in a nearby nuclear power facility.

I discovered that by coincidence. During my school years I waited on tables and tended bar. This crotchety old lady complained that her hot tea would be cold before she could drink it. After her constant complaining I decided that she would have no grounds in the future to complain. The next time she came for lunch I took the glass bottle(called hottle) which the hot water goes in, filled it with hot water and then put it in the microwave until I saw it boil. After five minutes(never saw any boiling) I had better things to do so I took it to her table. It had just a mere whisper of steam lingering at the surface. In her rush to immerse the bag before it got cold, she immediately unwrapped the bag and the instant it came in contact with the calm water, it erupted into a volcano of hell. It actually shot up so high that it shorted out the light fixture. She never said a word about the tea being too cold again. Amazingly she was un-hurt. The shape of the bottle provided a vertical launch.

Honest to goodness, I have no idea. My screen shows the correct time and time zone. Maybe my FR settings are screwed up somehow?!
