My sister in law is in her fourties and has emphysema. She has been asked by the Red Cross to allow them to fly her Washington, DC and testify that Bush's proposals against clean air will cause her health problems.
My wife asked me to provide information regarding whether this is a good idea or not. I have no idea what the hearing is or what the law is she is supposed to testify about.
Does anyone know what hearing is taking place next week ? What is the topic and what are the pro's and con's ?

I would appreciate that readers of this might ping others. Thanks in advance.

If she wants to help the advance of environmental socialism, she should go right ahead and testify.
However, it probably makes little difference either way.

Bush simply does not have 'proposals against clean air'.
Our president has balanced the lunacy from the green left with sanity, backed up by facts.
NO Bush policy today will have a dramatic effect on current air pollution levels EITHER WAY, up or down.
Tell her to tell the Red Cross (sickle and hammer) to cram it.

Well I don't know what the Bush proposals are but if it will lighten up restrictions on air pollution/quality then it most definitely will harm your sister-in-law as well as everyone else.
If she was asked to do this, I'd think she would have some knowledge about it or that the Red Cross would give her some information....jmo
Anyway...BUMP

She apparently wants to go. Its tough to tell her to tell them to shove it without specifics.
However I see an opportunity that if she is well addressed with the facts she may not end up saying what they want her to say.

Another reason to withold contributions from the Red Cross.

Why the hell does the Red Cross even care? I could see the American Lung Association making this request but, the Red Cross?
Screw them.

Sorry to all.

If your sister-in-law is willing, she shoild feign interest in participating just to see what coaching, talking points, and spin she recieves as preparation.

Please tell me if you know anything about this.

More reasons to NEVER EVER donate one penny to the Red Cross.

My suggestion: Have them provide their talking points, prepare her statement, then when she sits at the microphone she whips out her own statement that is actually a re-affirmation of the Bush policy.
That would cause quite a stir. . .what are "they" gonna do? Yank the microphone away? Carry her off? Nope.
By speaking her mind and telling the TRUTH, and doing it like I suggested, she will generate much media coverage and support (can't attack old ladies for speaking their mind, don't 'ya know).
Good luck.

Tell your sister to accept their offer, fly to Washington, testity in support of President Bush, and tell whoever she is speaking to that the Red Cross is the same bunch of crooks that has been ripping off donors who provided financial support to the 9/11 victims.
At least she'll get a free trip to Washington about it.
Even if she is not willing to testify "in support" of Bush, she should at least testify that she has no idea what the issue is all about and that the Red Cross simply sent her there to blab a sob story.

Western Civilization, specifically the United States, is a major polluter. Has been, is now, and will be. Undisputable.
The wheels of our legislative body turn so slowly, that even if Dubya decided to propose legislation to, say, outlaw internal combustion engines in cars, We would all (including the Freeper's sister-in-law) be dead by the time any meaningful change had been made in environmental law, and you still have to factor in time to engineer/manufacture whatever auto manufacturers could come up with.
There are dozens of factors in pollution levels...the one with the biggest impact in our lifetime was eliminating leaded gasoline.
If you think a new Bush policy would have a dramatic effect on air pollution, you should move to Kalifornia...word is they're gonna outlaw SUV's out there.
Cheers.

OK, so it's not the Red Cross.
What was the cause of her emphysema? Did she smoke when she was younger?
To: Alberta's Child
What was the cause of her emphysema? Did she smoke when she was younger? No. She is in her 40's and her exposure to smoke was as a child whose father smoked. The Lung Assoc attributes it to second hand smoke.
To: VRWC_minion
I see. I wasn't trying to pass judgement on her, but you made a similar point.
Maybe your sister should just testify truthfully about the whole thing -- "My emphysema is a direct result of my father's smoking, so President Bush's policies, whatever they may be, have nothing to do with it regardless of what these frauds from the American Lung Association sent me here to say."
To: VRWC_minion
Is she a physician who has intensely and extensively studied the effects of pollution and micro particulates on human lungs or is she just the most pitiful wretch they can find? I'll bet it is the latter.
Tell her to tell the Red Cross (acting on the pledge of money from some left wing wacko environmental group, no doubt) to go find another victim.
