"Suprise" attacks, by definition, are a surprise...when they succeed. The "surprise" part was not the point of my statement...the idea of ARMED CITIZENS was. Look at what has happened in Israel since Barak took away the guns of loyal, well trained, former IDF.

Well, we could put metal detectors at the doors to airports. Screen everybody while they stand outside.
Of course it won't stop there. We will have metal detectors installed at the entrances to all shopping malls, movie theatres, restauraunts, stadiums, office buildings...
When does it end? Life is not risk free. Airline security is designed to keep the bad guys and their weapons off the planes.

...don't know if this is related to middle east tensions.
This is not a jab at you...but I now hear from rocket scientist and Mayor of Los
Angeles Jimmy Hahn and another spokesman that there is no evidence that this
has been "an act of terrorism".
Amazing what different conclusions people can come to when
1. Of all the different air carriers at Los Angeles International Airport,
somebody just happens to pick the El-Al terminal...
2. And it happens on the first July Fourth following 9-11.
Nope, can't POSSIBLY be anything to do with terrorism or the religion of peace.
Move along folks, nothing to see here....

From Yahoo.com news: ...[Gov. Grey] Davis said in a statement[:] "That it happened on the day on which we honor what America stands for liberty, security and diversity makes this particularly more tragic."
"My heart, as well of those of all Californians, aches for the victims of this shooting and their families," he said.
He got 2 out of 3 right. Although, I doubt his idea of security is the same as the author of the D of I, or mine. I didn't see the word "diversity" in my copy of the D of I. Anyone have a more "recent" copy? Why am I reminded of "I feel your pain"? Maybe it's just my cynical nature.

"Haim Saphir.....""Mohammad Saffi"....
Totally peripheral, but interesting

Me too...we just went out to the county and bought some goodies. My 2 year old is beside himself at the sight of the rockets

If this is terrorist-related, they'll hem and haw on identity till the celebrations and fireworks are over tonight. Too many businesses, vendors and merchants will take a tremendous bath throughout the country if no one shows at the hundreds of thousands of events across the country. Panic and trampling could take place at fireworks shows if a wild rumor starts. Just my take.
By the way, if they know his age, they know who he is.

From
http://cbs2.com/AP/APTV/State/CA/n/CA--PlaneStolen-kn/news_html:
Small plane taken from Camarillo; no link to terrorism seenCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) The disappearance of a small airplane from a local airfield was under investigation by the FBI and Federal Aviation Administration, but authorities did not link the theft to terrorism.
The Cessna 182 was stolen from Camarillo Airport between Monday and Wednesday afternoon.
``We don't know why it was taken,'' Ventura County sheriff's Capt. Mike Aranda said late Wednesday, but he added that terrorism wasn't a main concern.

FNC has has Catherine Herridge on all day from the Mall in DC saying that the crowds may be down tonight because of the intense heat, not necessarily because of people fearing for their safety....

The "surprise" part was not the point of my statement...the idea of ARMED CITIZENS was. This attack was contained about as quickly as it possibly could have been, apparently within single digit seconds, even if every person there had been armed. If he/they just wanted to kill Americans/Jews, they shouldn't have picked El Al for the location of their attack. A more likely place to have armed defenders doesn't exist, outside of the White House. :)
A similar attack on a local mall or baseball game crowd would be likely to go on for minutes before being brought to an end.
To that extent I don't disagree with you. It just wouldn't have helped in THIS case.

How far is Camarillo from San Dimas?
I think someone earlier knew the owner of the plane that crashed as being a local in the area

"Ok, I didn't catch the all and took offense where I shouldn't have, no biggie...."NP...
I rarely drop an idea like that on my fellow FReepers 'heads'.......I'm not real good with the "standard disclaimer/warning part....probably my fault.

There are a few of us on FR who have come to the same conclusion as you this will be stalled until after the fireworks are over..
They know his age.... they know his name...

You are correct. The stolen plane seems to be a DIFFERENT one.
From Yahoo! maps, Camarillo to San Dimas is 75 miles.

I suppose when these folks show up at the airport, it will be treated as yet another "isolated incident"?.....

Well, well, well...an Arab male. I hope we get official confirmation about this, but you know all hell is going to break loose if this shooter has ties to any terrorist group. He may not--but he may be a sympathizer.
The cops should have the search warrant by now. I'm more than curious as to what they find in the shooter's house.
