US Government Corrects Site on Abortion and Breast Cancer
CHICAGO, Jul 2, 02 (CWNews.com) -- Under pressure from a group dedicated to publicizing the links between abortion and breast cancer, the National Cancer Institute has removed inaccurate information from an internet web site. Karen Malec, president of Illinois-based Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, said: "We're delighted that the National Cancer Institute has pulled its web page discussing the abortion-breast cancer link." The organization said that the information previously available on that web site had included "misrepresentation of the research, reliance on erroneous studies, confusion of the effects of miscarriage and abortion, inclusion of false statements, and refusal to acknowledge the deleterious effects of abortion."
The decision to remove the material came after 28 members of the US Congress had complained about the "scientifically inaccurate and misleading" information that the National Cancer Institute had provided. Pointing out that the internet site was subsidized by tax funds, the legislators demanded an accurate presentation.
The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer pointed out that while the web site had downplayed the connection between abortion and breast cancer, the weight of scientific study has suggested a strong correlation. In fact, the group noted, "28 out of 37 studies worldwide, and 13 of 15 American studies" show that women who procure abortions are significantly more likely to contract breast cancer. The group also noted that most of the American studies showing that link were underwritten, at least in part, by the National Cancer Institute.
I often remember that french woman who quit smoking at 95 years of age! She lived to age 122!! Perhaps the ingestion of some good french wine compensated for the indescretions created by the nicotine.
Fasten your seat belts! We're in for the next installment ... the Twinkie Wars. Several states, including NY, are now working on legislation to counterract the damage done to "the children" by the corrupt and greedy food industry.
sarcasm on> May the government continue to watch out for our best interests <sarcasm off.
I'm having no luck finding it myself.
I did in fact find a page that says:
"Other Factors - No data exist regarding the impact of abortion, diet, alcohol, or exercise, upon the risk of breast cancer among women at inherited risk of breast cancer."
So I would dispute the story. Below is the link to what I found.
http://www.nci.nih.gov/cancer_information/doc_pdq.aspx?viewid=55F8764B-A9C1-4250-B6A7-E136AEB14FE4
As I read the story, it only says "incorrect" information was deleted; there's no mention of putting up the correct studies. I guess this is in fact the case.
"Other Factors - No data exist regarding the impact of abortion, diet, alcohol, or exercise, upon the risk of breast cancer among women at inherited risk of breast cancer."
Could be true -- personally, I don't recall seeing (not that I track them) any reports at all about other risk facts affecting women at inherited risk.
