cigarette sales tax, state tax officials say they're stepping up efforts to be on the lookout for smugglers.

Taxation Department spokesman Gary Gundmundson says agents will be monitoring the state's borders for people bringing in cheaper cigarettes from states such as Kentucky, which has a three-cent cigarette sales tax.

Gudmundson says the department is training police agencies to check packs being sold at stores for Ohio tax stamps.

Possession of more than 60 dollars worth of cigarettes for sale in Ohio without paying the state's sales tax is a felony that carries jail time and a fine.

The Ohio sales tax of 55 cents pushes the price of a carton of name-brand cigarettes to about 40 dollars. In Kentucky, cigarettes are about 25 dollars a carton.

Washington State does the same thing. They do the ol' "asset seizure" thing on your car too.

With the cost of a carton, how can you not easily have $60 worth? :)

Can cigarettes still be bought from Indian smoke shops on the internet? Would this still be a felony if Ohions bought over the internet?

Of course they will charge people buying 5/10 cartons at a time for personal use with "resale". Cost them a bunch of lawyer fees and maybe confiscate a few cars out of it.
Saw a site where you can buy name brands for $15 a carton, air freight from Europe included. Think I'm going that route.

Possession of more than 60 dollars worth of cigarettes for sale in Ohio

Buy 'em in Kentucky for $25/carton, or in Switzerland for $18.00/carton, but just don't resale them.

Possession of more than 60 dollars worth of cigarettes for sale in Ohio

Try proving that it was not the reason you bought them. It is an excuse for them to seize your car, etc, on Suspicion...

Exactly! Possesion with intent to distribute.

Take pot for example, you go out to buy 1/4 OZ, the guy only has grams, you buy seven, get popped, since it is packaged in different bags, ITD, jail.
