Al-Qaeda Threat in Philadelphia?

Philadelphia, PA June 27, 2002 — David Henry reports from the Action Newsroom.

An Action News investigation reveals that a chain of jewelry stores operating in the Delaware Valley is being investigated by the FBI for possible connections to the Al Qaeda terror network.

A series of raids were carried out yesterday in Philadelphia and across the state of Pennsylvania.

The stores are mostly kiosks in shopping malls operating under the name "Intrigue Jewelers." They are all owned by Pakistanis under franchise agreements with a company called Gold Concepts, based in Pennsacola, Florida.

Intrigue operates stores at malls in Philadelphia, Plymouth Meeting, Harrisburg, and Monroeville. Until recently, they also had a kiosk at the Lehigh Valley Mall near Allentown. Owners and employees of the Intrigue shops at the Gallery in Center City and at the Plymouth Meeting Mall were questioned yesterday by agents from the FBI and INS. An employee at the shops in the Monroeville Mall tells us he was detained for hours yesterday.

Tariq Hussain says his home was searched and his computer was taken. He says the FBI accused him of funneling money to Ossama bin Laden's terror network. He says they questioned him about a photo he took two years ago of the NASDAQ building in New York, but he doesn't know how they knew about the photo.

The man in the photos taken at the World Trade Center just days before the attacks also worked at the Intrigue Jewelry store at the Lehigh Valley Mall. Two days before the attacks Ashar Iqbal Butt came to a photo shop in the mall looking for the pictures. The clerk says Butt seemed anxious to get them.

He was picked up on September 12th and was later charged with entering the country on a false passport just a month before the attacks.

Action News has confirmed that yesterday's sweep is part of a nationwide investigation involving at least 60 jewelry outlets. The justice department confirms that a number of people have been detained for questioning, but no charges have been filed yet.

The link doesn't work, but I did find two cases against Quality Gold. Very Strange! Both judgements are dated 2000.

Bankruptcy awards of $212,881.40 and $235,612.61

Yet, in 2002, they are awarded enterprise exemptions totaling almost 9 million? Something doesn't add up.

Well if this teaches the Al-Q's anything it will be to go digital for the photo's....... (I always knew that fotomat weenie was looking at my girlfriends pictures :o)

If these mall "souks" are everywhere supporting tango ops then what is next ? Apu's quickie mart's ? Guru Bob and his wife Spot's no-tell motel ? Mohhamad Al Jeddah's Cajun and Tex-Mex Emporium ?

My point being is we are infested with islamic idiots and if the good muslims don't get a handle on the bad muslims then they leave it up to common citizens who like me can't tell a good muslim from a bad muslim at CQB range......

Stay Safe, Stay equipped to handle what happens upon you and yours.........

Yes, that's what I wanted to show you. I couldn't figure how they managed that. Did you find any information on the creditor in that case?

Thank you for the heads-up this morning. I had initially heard the story while driving home from work. I made dinner while checking the web-sites to find the story, and post it. What a wealth of information we have here at FR!!

One of the other businesses that I have noticed are being bought and run by Middle-Eastern types in the past few years are gas stations. I believe in free enterprise for all "Americans", but those people of questionable legal status should have all of their papers checked.

The illegals are setting-up cash businesses in our country to funnel the cash out. There is no question that the jewelry kiosks are just the tip of the iceberg. They have found a lucrative business where they own no actual property. Therefore, there would be less legal paperwork to fill-out, and no paper trail. They simply plunk down some cash and rent their spaces from the mall.

Looks like they are stirring up the rats to knock them off balance just before the 4th of July Holiday.

Their ownership of gasoline franchises is particuliarly troubling.

Besides having access to a lot of explosive gasoline in the tanks of the outlets, do they own gasoline tanker trucks (remember the warning on this re gasoline tanker trucks being used as bombs in Jewish neighborhoods.)?

Then, if they put something into those tanks at their filling stations, a lot traffic would come to a halt.

I think that you are correct. They authorities have had this information since September 12th. They were taking the time to acquire more information on the parties involved.

I think that one of the reasons the government has not had mass deportations, is we can better monitor those known sympathizers who are here already. The line from the Godfather movie "Keep you friends close and your enemies closer" seem appropriate.

I read something yesterday that said the military would be stepping-up fly-overs for the next few months over the major U.S. cities. The fact that this announcement has come so close to the July 4th holiday is telling.

Evidently Al-Qaeda was moving money around via diamonds.

These stores are money-laundering operations. All this speculation about them being used to plant bombs in malls is, IMHO, off base. They are much more valuable for moving money under the government radar. Although they are probably going to receive an IRS rectal examination now that the FBI is on to them. They better have all their receipts.

I think we need to be viewing diamond and jewelry trade that this thread tracks as a means of laundering Al-Qaeda and drug money around the globe under the guise of a legitimate business enterprise. I would not be surprised to find out that they have pawn shops in the network as well as this would be an easy way or making deposits/withdrawals. A similar banking system works in the middle east among honey traders.

I agree. I also think they could be message centers. It would be very easy to have information passed through secret passwords. In fact, the jewelry pictured in the web site could be itself a code.

It's the PetroJello you gotta watch out for.

PetroZello - maybe they figured it might be taken for Italian.

That's a good one for such a cash based merchandised business. Sometimes you get cash discounts from these types of vendors. A fine pig's tooth comb seems to be in order.
