Wednesday June 26 08:48 AM EDT State: Veiled Muslim woman 'hypersensitive' By Pedro Ruz Gutierrez A Muslim woman from Winter Park is being "hypersensitive" because she refuses to show her full face for a drivers-license picture and should be required to remove her veil for the photograph, an attorney for the state said in a recent court brief.
The court filing outlines the state's arguments going into Thursday's showdown between the American Civil Liberties Union (news - web sites) and the state's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles in the case of Sultaana Freeman. In the document, the state also says driving is a privilege, not a right.
And law-enforcement concerns after Sept. 11 should override Freeman's contention that her constitutional rights are being violated, Assistant Attorney General Jason Veil wrote.
Howard Marks, Freeman's lawyer, argues that her religious freedom, freedom of speech, equal protection, right to privacy and due process were violated by the state's cancellation of her license in December.

Easy solution. Just follow Saudi law and now allow women in the front seat.

A driver's license is a privilege and not a right! You either earn the privilege by accepting the provisions set forth or you deny, yourself, opportunity to participate - in driving in this instance.
Driver's License's are taken away each day for lessor offenses. But one who refuse to comply with customary procedures should be denied on the basis of either National Security or not so common, common sense!

Well, now, if she doesn't have to remove her veil for the license picture, then I demand the right to wear my Groucho glasses and nose with a full fake beard.
Wait, those are my regular glasses. Hmmm, maybe I need to trim the eyebrows back.

A better answer to her "hypersensitivity" would be for her to move to one of those "progresive" Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia where she would live under virtual house arrest and she certainly wouldn't be driving.
If these people have such problems living in this country, the door is open for them to leave!

Didn't we just go through this a couple of months ago? And the woman had her picture taken with the veil? Or am I just "hypersensitive"?

She had her picture taken with the veil and now Florida has come to it's senses and revoked her drivers license.

Hello lindaloo. See you're from Albq. Met my wife there and my sis lives there now. It's where I lived when I joined the Army. Wish I could figure out a way to get back. Great place.

Four or five years ago there was a little hullabaloo in Ft. Worth when a Diamond-Shamrock gas station refused to serve a muslim woman and asked her to leave because they did not allow people in their store who were wearing masks. I got a laugh out of it, but I think she ended up getting some kind of apology from Diamond-Shamrock.

I will support, in principle, any law that makes life more miserable for mohammedans in America simply because I hate them.
Islam is the scourge of the earth and mohammedans are lower than vermin. They should be treated as such. That includes American-born "converts" (as this woman is) to this barbaric, uncivilized, despicable excuse for a religion.

I don't think the woman is hypersensitive. I think she and her husband are just breaking chops.
The picture is the least of it. The thought that she's driving with a veil over her face is far worse.
To: lindaloo
How on earth can she see to drive with a veil on her head?!?

that her constitutional rights are being violated, Where does the Constitution say "The right to drive an automobile without a proper license"? I have searched and searched and can't find it.

Try to go to the bank wearing a mask. Put on a mask of the Pope if you are Catholic.
Claim religious persecution when they require to you remove it or leave.

Don't forget that the airlines require a photo ID of all adult passengers on planes now.
"Yep, it's a picture of a blanket alright!"

I gather the state is appealing the decision that allowed this idiot to get a driver's license with a photo of black cloth for identification.

There ARE some civilized Muslims, but they do not shroud their faces. Shrouded face = uncivilized. It sends chills up my spine when I see little girls "dressed" like this on the trains (NE U.S., where there are lots of black converts to wacky versions of this religion).
