What Was Life Like in 1930?
The 1930 census offers greater insight and detail into American life in the early 20th century than virtually any other resource. And the census has just been released to the public after being sealed for 72 years (by law, individual records cannot be released to the public until 72 years after the census in which they were collected). The census records contain information on births, deaths, relationships, origins, residences, occupations, citizenship, and more.
Test your knowledge of what life was like for your ancestors!
1. Today, life expectancy for those living in the United States is about 77.3 years. In 1930 life expectancy was _______.
a) 67.5 years
b) 59.7 years
c) 51.3 years

Gee, I wonder why MSN is testing Americans on their knowledge of 1930?

I only got 5 out of 11 right. Not too bad, I guess, considering neither of my parents had been born until after 1930.
To: ValerieUSA
I got 6/11, but some of those were wild guesses

I got 7/11. Is there a pecuniary reward?
To: ValerieUSA
neither of my parents had been born until after 1930.
My late Father was born in 1917 and my late Mother was born in 1927. I could only achieve a 4-7 record. If they had only asked what it was like to sleep in trenches on a beach near the Leyte Gulf while under attack from the Japanese...then I could have told them one of Dad's stories. I was born in '62....one of the last baby boomer's?

Five right. But then, those were just guesses. . . and I was born before 1930. Hahahaha! Hey, they asked the wrong questions. Average number of meals per week during the Depression? How much did your standard apple sell for on the streets? Pencils? How far did you have to walk to find an un-guarded orchard? What was the standard hourly rate of pay for children? How many hours (days) would it take a lamp to burn a gallon of kersosene? How many grades were taught in a one-room school house? Should I go on?

Yes, you are right, and very well said. My mother lived for a time in a tent with her mom and dad in Washington state. They added a floor and a small stove .... Don't want to talk about my dad because he had it far, far worse.
Average price for an apple? Guessing about 2 cents. Just guessing. Maybe that's the point. Everybody was guessing and nobody really knows or really understands.
I read the books and heard the stories. Heard about guys traveling on box cars across country and the sort of bad luck they ran into along the way.

Sorry about your Dad. Dittos here. The doctor said my Mom died from a kidney infection. Looking back, I believe she died from ten long years of heartbreak.

It does sort of make you wonder about the stock market tomorrow... I guess you must be having second thoughts about your rosey predictions for the economy you made back 2 years ago.
