Polygraph tests given in case of missing Utah girl
06/20/2002
SALT LAKE CITY - Police have administered polygraph tests to a number of people both inside and outside 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart's family, authorities said Thursday.
Sixteen days into the investigation of Elizabeth's apparent abduction, police say they still have no suspect. The girl reportedly was taken from her bedroom at gunpoint in the early hours of June 5.
Police Chief Rick Dinse wouldn't elaborate on what the polygraph tests found.
He also said police also have searched the hard drives of 12 computers, and "We have found nothing on computers that creates a nexus (link) to this crime."
FBI agents are looking at other kidnappings, including two teens taken from the same apartment complex in Oregon and one in Idaho Falls, Idaho, that ended with the suspect's suicide, said special agent Dan Roberts. The one in Idaho Falls, which is about 190 miles from Salt Lake City, took place the same morning as the abduction of Elizabeth.

In addition, police said they were aware of one e-mail ransom note, but Dinse said they considered it a hoax.
This week the police account of Elizabeth's kidnapping has changed.
Police say Elizabeth's 9-year-old sister, Mary Katherine, who was sleeping in the same bed, feigned sleep during the abduction and soon after tried to go to her parents' bedroom to alert them.
But instead Mary Katherine saw that the kidnapper was still in the home and ran back into her room. She didn't tell her parents for two hours, police said. Police had initially reported, based on secondhand accounts, that Mary Katherine had been threatened by the kidnapper to keep quiet.
On Wednesday, Dinse rejected any idea that his department was deliberately deceiving the media. He said police had interviewed Mary Katherine four times, most recently on Saturday.
"There is no conspiracy afoot here," Dinse said. "We are not telling you everything ... and we probably are not going to until we're further along."
Working from Mary Katherine's description, police are looking for a white man, 30 to 40 years old, with dark hair and hair on his arms and back of his hands. He was wearing tan pants, dark shoes, lighter jacket and a Scottish-style golf hat. He held a small handgun.
He's changed shoes and ditched the jacket.
Hey, to 9-year-old Mary Katherine, 30-40 years would be as old as dirt.
Seems an appropriate phrase, somehow...

Does the little sister have x-ray vision to see hairy arms on a man wearing a jacket? Don't think so. She knows the man and knows he has hairy arms. Something stinks here.
