Southwest Airlines will start charging larger passengers for two seats on its 2,800 daily flights starting June 26.

The airline, which operates out of 58 U.S. cities and is the largest carrier at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, will begin charging "persons of size" for two seats if they think they may not fit comfortably in one.

Your ticket price purchases you the use of a seat. If you require more than one seat you should have to purchase the use of two seats. It's pretty simple really.

Ok, I give up. Who is the moron that convinced you that you were purchasing a seat?

When I fly, I am making a contract between myself and the airline to deliver me to a specified destination. They accept that contract and money is exchanged.

There is nothing special about the major airlines. If I hire someone at my local airport to fly me to a destination in a small aircraft, I expect to safely arrive at that location.

Seats? I did not hire this pilot to give me a seat, I hired him to fly me to the location I requested.

What, did every Freeper on this thread suddenly go brain dead?

Then again, I **STILL** think seats in Cattle/Sheeple class are too small. . .

I recently flew Northwest to Mississippi. The seats on the Airbus were SMALLER than the seats on the AVRO RJ, the little jet that flew from Memphis to Gulfport! Each airline has differing seat belt sizes as well. I had no trouble with the belts on N'west, or Delta, but I had to get an extender on American on a flight a couple of years ago. Sir SuziQ's belt was snug on that flight too, and he's relatively thin!

My dad went on a diet and shed about 40 lbs last year. No, it was not easy learning to make better food choices and exercising daily, but the easy part did eventually come along----buying clothes. He no longer has to have things 'let out'.

It's about time they paid their fair share. I think the person having to share 1/2 of his/her seat with the large one's blubber should fly for 1/2 price too.

And while I'm at it... They should have to pay double (at least) for health care. I'm tired of my insurance premiums being high because to the high medical costs related to obesity.

What if the airlines simply started charging "by the pound"?

showing your ignorance when it comes to overweight people

Ignorance? Why should a morbidly obese person have the
privilege to spill their mass, weight, and bodily noises
over into my paid space?

Perhaps those of us who do not require two seats should
just turn the tables and sit on top of the really fat folks.

Passengers are human cargo. Cargo charges are either based on weight or volume. If you are high volume, high weight, you should pay more.

Conversly, small, thin humans should pay less.

Being fat is like having AIDS: it's a lifestyle thing, and the result of conscious decisions.

Amen to that!!!!! Just send a few of the "I can't help it it's genetic..." fat people to Ethiopia to live on thier food and wages for a few years and lets see if they can help it or not.

Simple solution. Charge regular fair for 175 lbs of human cargo. Deduct for less add for more. Weigh'em as they get on the plane. Frequent fliers benefit by dieting!

I have no problems with that concept. Remember, I am a pilot and do understand the actual costs of flying.

Of course, I would have to charge based upon the miles flown, and those discount rates would no longer apply.

Giggle, I just tried to make a fuel calculation with a Boing 747. Include a woman of 280 lbs or 110 lbs. Ok, I would have to charge the fat woman about $3.27 extra.

Seen any of us used to be or currently over weight blame it on our genes? Read the posts and see if you can find one. It's like any thing else (smoking, drinking, driving fast cars etc. lol). It's not a matter of knowing what to do. It's just doing it.

That's funny, Fed-ex charges me a hell of a lot more than that for 170 lbs!

Oh, then I guess you wouldn't mind if the airlines removed the seats and just hung straps from the ceilings.

"And being jammed into my seat, unable to exert my warrior skills to slay the enemies of freedom, because that lardass has blocked all access to the aisle."

Good point, my friend, and that is why I always (years before 9/11) have made sure that I'm in an aisle seat. From your post, I see that we have about the same vital statistics (ht./wt.), so I also prefer the aisle seat to avoid my "neighbor's" overflow of flesh and to spare others from having to deal with my shoulder-span by leaning somewhat into the aisle.

But, as I said earlier, fat people make great shields.....]8~)

Damit dude, quit giving SouthWest Arlines any ideas!

But seriously, you are making a contract between yourself and the airline to fly to a specific destination. You are NOT buying a seat.

I admit it, even if I should be ashamed. One day, my wife and I attented a Scotts festival and they were doing the Caper Toss.

The guy lost control of the Caper and it was heading our way.

Fat people make good shields, so I grabbed my wife and put her over me.

Thankfully, she never knew what I had done, and the Caper missed us by 5 feet.

Excuse me, but the nation's fat people are fat because of choices they make.

And you are ignorant because you choose to be. How about people who have a thyroid problem?

Are you aware that a lot of overweight people got that way due to emotional problems? People have been known to turn to drugs, alcohol. How many people do you know have been killed by food addictions? Who is getting hurt by a fat person? Hmm?

So do you think they should be penalized, punished?
