Relax, this is your captain speaking

On a recent United Airlines flight from Chicago to Washington, D.C., Capt. David Miller stepped from the cockpit to speak to his passengers, who included Tribune reporter Jeff Zeleny. Here is what the captain said.

"I am the captain for your flight to Washington, D.C. I am back in the cabin to talk to you before we leave, rather than from the cockpit. I think under the events of the last year or so, it's more [effective] for me to make my announcement from this vantage point rather than from the front.

"We recognize that you are here because you trust us."

No, that's not true. I only subject myself to the airport police state when I have no other choice.

Stop flying. I did.

I pretty much did as well.

Had to make one emergency family-related flight this year, but I do not anticipate doing it again for a long, long time. The security goons separated me from my keys while they took me aside and felt my crotch and waved magic wands and performed all sorts of ju-ju over me. By the time they let me go I had forgotten all about my keys, and didn't think of them again until the very second the plane left the ground.

And airport security personnel are oh-so-concerned about reuiniting you with possessions that they separated you from. </sarcasm>

["...] Be careful what you say. When you say something that is the least bit provocative and a flight attendant hears it or a passenger hears it and it's reported to me, I will have no choice. I will have to land the airplane at the nearest suitable field, and you'll probably be handcuffed, arrested and taken off the airplane. [..."]

The oh-so-courteous police state in the sky. And the passengers applauded? What kind of sheep in humanoid form are grazing in this country?

Even if I have to fly in an extreme emergency -- and those, where you have NO choice, are damned few -- I will not, under any circumstances, fly with the bootlickers of the State at United or American Airlines.

Very nice speech, but I would rather that the Captain was up front, preflighting that aircraft! (Or at least watching the Second Officer do it...)
