FIRST STRIKE: After five days of "positive" ads, Gov. Gray Davis unleashed the first in what will likely be a series of attack ads on Republican opponent Bill Simon -- and with good reason.
There's a new poll floating around Sacramento that shows the embattled Davis trailing Simon by a whopping eight points.

I agree that if the Simon camp sees that the ads are hurting him, they should respond. So far, they're not doing that. Below is a quote from Simon's consultant from another article:
"There is no way voters are going to stand for a six-month election campaign for governor," says Simon campaign chief Sal Russo. "When someone is taking the gun out to shoot themselves, you just don't want to say anything to make them shoot at you."
I think that says it all. Patience. It worked in the primary when everyone kept yelling at Simon to attack Riordan. He didn't do it early. He won by more than 18 pts. I'd stick with that strategy myself.
FYI: everyone (outside of politics like my liberal Republican mother) I have spoken to have disliked Davis' ads. I don't trust my own judgement because I despise the man, but I think they are weak.

Wow! Many political cartoons speak volumes. So much can be said in one or two images and conveyed in seconds.
On the media, read Bernard Goldberg's book Bias? It confirmed what I already knew about the liberal media bias.
On that vain, I just watched the local news. Laura Bush was out stumping for Simon in San Francisco. The news pointed out the disagreements between Simon-Bush about the federal leases on the California off-shore oil drilling. (Said nothing of the state leases nor of all they points where they agree.)
I'm digressing, then the news showed California's favorite state senator Pistol Packing Don Perata, who had wanted a nickle tax per buller, now wanting to drug test all major league ball players for steroids and things. Think they should drug test the state legistators. Some of these laws they dream up... They must be smoking something...
Good night.

Patience is a virtue that is not too present these days in many politicians or voters. Let Davi$ Shoot his Wad Now... Come September and October is when the real campaign begins.

I agree that if the Simon camp sees that the ads are hurting him, they should respond. So far, they're not doing that. I agree there's no need to respond so early if the Davis ads have no effect, but I hope Simon's campaign has some potential ads prepared so that they may respond quickly if things turn nasty.

I think I see a pattern there-- DRRDRRD... guess what's next?

That all depends on whether you want to include Pete Wilson. Some people consider him a RINO on the social issues, and a fiscal conservative otherwise. The most important thin he did ten years ago was to block the Democrats re-districting. It ended up with a three judge panel, which devised rather fair and reasonable Assembly, State Senate, and Congressional districts.

Simon will win!!! Wait till you see what is coming up next! He is going to Blitz Davis. He gets better with every speech and with every event. Remember I told you so from the very beginning! I gave him my broom and it is going to be a clean sweep!

LOL! Yes, having the state back would be nice! I was absolutely sickened to read that Clinton might have an inside track to the Public employee's retirement fund...seems he is good buddies with the higher ups in Pers! And someone was suggesting he should be on their advisory board! What kind of crap is that from a person who lost his license to practice law? I wonder how much of the Pers fund will go into Clinton's pocket??? Yes! I want the state back too! This place is a friggin joke as is!

Thanks for the ping. Simon's lead is great, but it's too small and too soon to count on. The dems lie and cheat enough that I will only be certain of his success when I can see him seated. :)

I think (with all due respect) supporters like you will feel uncomfortable with some of his answers. LOOK/LISTEN to see if he REALLY answers the questions.. or if he spins,K? You may be right. But discomfort alone would not be enough to scare me away from Bill Simon. He would need some HUGE skeletons to lose my imaginary vote (since I'm not a Californian). :-)

He will most likely get our votes. FOR POSITIVE WE WOULD NEVER VOTE FOR DAVIS!!! The only way that Simon could lose our vote, is if there was a legitimate, WELL ADVERTISED ORGANIZED STATEWIDE attempt to do a write in for Jones!!
Personally I've never seen anyone win that way.. but I wish it could happen in this one!! Oh well.. it looks like Simon, cause it sure as heck won't be DAVIS!!! :o)

In 2000, Bush most likely won the legal popular vote. I'm bothered how we are so apathetic about guarding our votes and not prosecuting people who commit voter fraud.Hopefully things are being done under the radar. The Dems have been complaining about the new voter ID systems so some things must be progressing, or they wouldn't be complaining.

Gore did close toward the end, compliments of the DWI story, thereby tilting many swing states to him and turning a potential large electoral victory into a squeaker. . . . and probably knocked off Ashcroft's reelection bid . . .
We'll never know the true impact of the bogus Florida call on Dubya's final popular vote count. No, we won't. But considering that exit polling is very questionable legally because of the secret-ballot laws, I would like to think that FL would go whole hog and outright ban the practice in the state. That would put broadcasting out of the business of calling elections in real time, thus out of the business of influencing the outcome of the close election by calling the results based on Eastern Time Zone exit poll results. Broadcasters would hate it. But they richly deserve it.
To: conservatism_IS_compassion
. . and probably knocked off Ashcroft's reelection bid . . . Well, Ashcroft was done in by three factors, in my view. Gore's surge, not campaigning after the death of Carnahan, and the illegal opening of the polls after hours in Dem districts. Geez, I remember Ashcroft and Talent both being ahead by 2-3 points at around 9:30 or 10:00 Eastern time. By the time midnight rolled around I think both had lost.
