Offensive Ads on Opera Browser
Posted on 06/10/2002 3:15:38 PM PDT by steve86
My pride and joy browser (Opera 6.0 - Linux) has just been canned in favor of Mozilla.
In the last week I have seen two offensive ads in the advertisements window, the first being "20 Condoms Free" and the second being "Hot Skins for your Browser". Both were accompanied by semi-lurid graphics.
These R-rated ads are being delivered although I am signed up only for "automotive" as a preferred category. There is a paid version of Opera without the ads but I'm not interested at this point. I would expect that the hot skins ad becomes X-rated real quick if you were to click on it.
Complain to press@opera.com or just say no!

Mozilla.
P.S. - Market research has revealed that guys who dig cars dig broads - what a surprise!

Hey, even if you're not into PC garbage, that kind of terminology is still very inappropriate. Never call chicks broads.

I have been using Opera since version 5 and i have never noticed any of that sort of ad.
Of course, I really don't pay much attention to that part of the window.
Ads are the price of not having to pay for the browser and I don't find them to be nearly as obtrusive as the pop-up windows that Microsoft seems to enjoy. In Opera, I suppress the pop-ups. The Opera banner ads are at the upper right above the toolbars and the only ones that I found obtrusive were the ones that used flashing images to attract the eye.
You have the choice of paying $39.00 US for a registered version which does not have the ads.
I found Mozilla to be somewhat slow and kludgy when I am posting long articles to Free Republic or when using it as a mailer or NNTP client.
Opera loads faster than Mozilla and used tighter code as it does not try to be anything but a browser
I use Opera for everything except Java pages (such as crossword puzzles). I use Netscape 4.78 for Java pages.
For email I prefer Kmail which is part of KDE but my cable provider just switched to SMTP Auth which is not yet a feature on Knode so I am using sylpheed instead for email.
May I suggest that you post a message on newsgroup opera.linux on NNTP server news.opera.no to suggest that as browsers are often used by children, such ads ought not to be used or alternatively that an Opera user be enabled to block this type of ad. For NNTP newsgroups, I am using Knode.
I am running Mandrake 8.1, having tried 8.2 and decided that I would wait for a version that includes KDE 3 before upgrading.
As I don't need the manual, I buy my newer versions of linux from Cheapbytes for about US$10.00 including mailing to Canada.
The last price I saw for the retail release with manual was $39.00 which is a hell of a lot cheaper than Toyland charges for any of its operating systems.

Dang. I was a Netscape 4.xx diehard for many years.
Never cared for IE and Netscape 6 sucked the big hairy whazoo.
Now I'm finally getting used to Opera based on JohnRob's recommendation.
I really like the features EXCEPT for the blasted banner ads.
Waddaya think, Pardek? Should I give Mozilla a try?

"There is a paid version of Opera without the ads but I'm not interested at this point"
If your getting it for free, don`t complain about the ads they use to pay the costs of giving it to you free.

KDE 3 is nice. I use Konqueror for 95% of my web browsing, Mozilla for the rest.

I don't use Opera so I don't know for sure, but a lot of internet ads are posted through a link with DoubleClick or some similar outfit. So Opera may well have sold a certain amount of time on their browser without knowing what ads would appear. That doesn't entirely get them off the hook. But if you alert them to the situation, maybe they might do something about it.

Same here - I loved the old Netscape. When 6 came out, I downloaded it, and found it to be unwieldy bloatware. I decided to switch to IE for a bit, and became addicted to the Google taskbar and "view partial source" option.
Mozilla will bring back great memories for you....
To: Senator Pardek
Thanks, I'll give it a try.
I haven't downloaded much to further bog down my hard drive lately anyway.
Maybe if I like it, it'll motivate me to remove all the other ones I've allowed to accumulate.
To: Senator Pardek
Of course the downside of using IE is that you have to use a Toyland operating system.
I will stick to Linux for real work
I have multi-boot on my machines.
That is because my son uses Windows (Where did I go wrong?)

I have been hearing good things about KDE 3 but as it is a very big download of many RPM packages, I decided to wait until a version of Mandrake comes out with it as part of the default install.
As to Konqueror, I found it a tad slow and I could not really figure out how to get the Flash, MPEG and MIDI plugins to work with it.
The multimedia plugins work fine with Plugger 4.0 under Netscape 4.78 or Opera 6.

Been using Mozilla solidly since RC1 on Linux and Windows. I haven't seen a pop-up window since. In windows, with quick launch enabled (just like IE really is behind the scenes) Mozilla starts up faster than IE. I've had ZERO problems with pages rendering incorrectly. I use the pinball skin on all my machines. Nice and tight. Get it
here.

Why are you guys so cheap you complain about something you didn't even pay for?
For about $40 you won't get any banner ads as part of Opera...
Is that really too much for you two???
How do you expect the Opera developers to continue producing if you refuse to provide ANY compensation for their work?
Unbelievable.
I paid for it and it isn't even my primary browser.

I primarily use Opera 6.03, and it does OK even on most Java pages, but when it doesn't, I like Smart Alec Voyager. Very minimalist interface and pretty quick. No email client.
