Mozilla 1.0 now available for download
Mozilla.Org ^ | 6.5.02

Mozilla has finally released their 1.0 final version.

Mozilla is the core technology that Netscape uses, however, Mozilla is about four generations more advanced than even the Netscape 7.0 beta that was released last week. (and definitely less kludgy than AOL/Netscape!) In addition, it is an open source browser that seems to keep getting better with time. For me, it hasn't replaced IE, but it certainly lets me do a few things more easily than previously.

One of the biggest pluses to Mozilla is a setting that will allow you to stop child windows from being opened by your browser when you use the web (i.e., no more frazzlin' X10 pop-under ads!).

It may not be enough to replace IE for you, but it is at least worth a look.

It seems the fad now is to replace the pop-ups (since everyone is disabling them through 3rd party sw) and replace them with forced on flash presentations that block what you are attempting to view for a period of time, until you can X out of that. Is there anything that will stop that short of disabling flash?

But the email cliet in Opera is pretty crude.

Agreed, but Opera has the advantage of being one of the fastest (if not THE fastest) browsers out there. Matter of fact, the only one I would put in the same league, speed-wise is iCab on the Mac side. There's nothing on the PC side that is as fast as Opera is.

Funny you should mention that, I ran across a new one for Jaguar on Weather.com just two or three minutes ago - I don't know a way...yet. I'm sure someone will figure out a way around that one soon enough.

I'm sold on it already...

In less than 5 minutes I downloaded and installed it, and now I'm freepin' on Mozilla! It's so cool!

I just downloaded it. It's pretty fast and the appearance is Netscape-- ah the nostalgia. (It works much better than Netscape, so far.)

Agreed. Opera is fast. (This Mozilla seems just as fast, BTW.) But Opera is just awkward to me-- the browser that is. The mail is even more awkward.

It's based on the same codebase as Netscape, so it's going to look the same. Basically it is the functionality of Netscape in an open-source package with all of the commercial bloat removed.

I'm not sure, but it does, that's why I downloaded it to begin with.

mhking, I am a Netscape user (6.2) UGH! horrible! I do like 2 features:
1. Password manager
2. Form filler-outer.
Does Mozilla have these 2 features? I've heard many good things about Mozilla. I'm leary of I.E; always putin out fixes for email/virus intrusions that dont seem to affect Netscape. your advice welcome!

Yes, it reminds me of the days when Netscape was THE browser of choice. Nice, functional, simple, stripped-down menu bar - I love it.

I must reluctantly disagree with you on this one (sort of).  IE probably runs better on Macs than it does on Wintel.  Given that, however, I'd have to agree that porting Mozilla to various platforms is harder because it runs on so many of them.

Yes and yes to both items. It's pretty nice in that regard. One other feature it includes is the ability to open new browser instances within separate "tabs" by using Alt-T. This way, you don't end up with window clutter all over the place either. It'll take a minute to get used to the multiple instances being tabbed at the top of the screen, but once you're used to it, it is pretty impressive.

I'd say that IE runs equally well on both platforms (I use both Mac and Wintel), but you're right about one thing - considering the sheer number of platforms that Mozilla has been ported to (and in stable form, no less!), it's a pretty impressive product.

How do you pronounce "Mozilla"? Is it "Mot-zilla", "Mod-zilla", "Mot-silla"...?

I always thought that it was "Moe-Zilla", except that I didn't pronounce it with as much as a delay as one might with a hyphenated word.

I've always pronounced it "Moe-zilla" myself.

Opera's email is worthless, but the browser is first rate, I can't think of a faster, more stable and more customizble browser. as for email, try The Bat, the macro templates and regex are invaluable features.

I stay as far as I can from Micro$oft products, unfortunately, I'm still on windows machine, at least XP is hundred years better than ME trash I've had for 6-month.
