Parents Were Asleep In Bedroom
SALT LAKE CITY -- A gunman forced his way into a house and abducted a 14-year-old girl Wednesday while her parents slept in their bedroom, police said.
Police said the man also threatened Elizabeth Smart's 9-year-old sister and said he would harm the teen if her sister said anything. The two girls share a bedroom in the home in the affluent Federal Heights neighborhood.
Her sister waited several hours before alerting her parents because of the threat, said Duane Baird, a Salt Lake City police spokesman.
"A two-hour window gives anyone the opportunity to be away from this area," Baird said.
Searchers began looking for clues before dawn Wednesday.
Elizabeth was abducted at about 2 a.m. on June 5, 2002. The abductor is described as a white male, with dark hair and wearing a white jacket and a white baseball cap. Elizabeth was wearing red pajamas, and he let her take a pair of shoes, police said.
The sister told police that the soft-spoken man got into the house by forcing open a window and had a small black handgun.

This will sound "out there", but if it was a construction employee, my money goes to one of the carpet layers. Those guys seem to be scum of the earth in most instances. Just watch.

Unfortunately, having an alarm and having it on may not save a child's life. Look at little Danielle Van Dam. True ... but an alarm going off may single the parents that there was a problem in the house ..
Well that is as long as they checked the house ..

Prayers that she is safe and can escape.

I am 42 and it would paralyze me if a man came into my room and said that.
The 9yr old could have not known if this man was still in the house or what if she was in her bed paralyzed by fear.
I will continue reading but wanna ask do we have any Freepers in that area who could help by volenteering?
MSNBC has had this as the top story today I think the police did right by this family getting this info out in the media and searching for her as if this was the worst case scenerio.
It was reported on MSNBC that the abductor allowed her to get a pair of shoes on when she asked him. (for what that is worth)
I am glad he was not of Arab decent or some of ya'll would have the story really blown out with all your scenerios.

No doubt someone will appear on this thread soon to tell us that since the alarm wasn't turned on that her parents should have foreseen this. You know, like the Levys deserve losing Chandra because they didn't break up her affair, and the Van Dammes deserved to lose Danielle because they're swingers.
I have an 11 year-old, and I have no idea how she would react. I only know that she can't keep up a lie for 15 minutes. Not now, and certainly not when she was nine!

Somebody else on this thread pointed out that they probably have it off when they're at home I noticed that after I made my post ...
Maybe I should read the thread first ..

How about a Devil's Island choir?
I believe castration is supposed to be effective in many cases.

He sure knew what window to go to, didn't he.

If it were my sister, I wouldn't be able to wait two hours. When the guy left, I'd run right to my parents screaming.
The story may be right, but I know that's what I'd do. Two hours?

I was suspicious of Tawana's story but the Susan Smith one fooled me completely, when I saw the videos of them playing with the children in a nice looking living room with all the electronic niceties anyone could want I fell for the snatch story!
Now I am far more cynical, but on this one I still think it was a grab, depending on the timliness of the photo anyway, this kid doesn't look like a runner to me!!

Stories like this make excellent cases for German Shepherds, Rottweilers, boxers, chow chows, etc. (Chihuahuas need not apply).

It was just on the news the a black R&B Grammy Award winner (RJ Kelly) is facing 15years prison and a fine.
This pedophile video taped himfeslf having sex with an underage girl (did not catch her age)
Remember for those of us that are alot older what happened when we were young and tried to tell. I was only six when it happened to me (oral sex) and called a liar told to keep my mouth shut or I would get a ass kicking. Sadly I was used by different outstanding citizen pedophiles untill I was 15 and started to defend myself against all the town perverts.

The house is up for sale, any pervert could have toured the house as a "prospective buyer" and learned who lived in the house and where. I don't see why anyone thinks intimidating a 9 year old is difficult. Children don't usually make up stories like this. Besides it doesn't really matter the circumstances, she's probably dead by now and some scum is walking around out there who will do this again.

Polly Klaas must have been dating tatoo man when he took her from her house.
oceanperch:
I can remember waking up as a child & being absolutely convinced the sound of the heater was instead an intruder walking through the house. I did not move a muscle. I did not scream or call for my parents. I was scared to death; if I showed one sign of awareness, the imagined intruder would know and come into my room & kill me. (A child's imagination in the middle of the night can be as bad as the real thing.)
I can see myself frozen with fear for 2 hours. Sad to think she is automatically doubted because we look at her experience with an adult's perspective instead of a child's.

If the younger sister is in on it her actions would be very obvious. If there was someone in her room that she had met before or there was someone in there that she never met, her reaction while telling her parents and the police would show right through.

Has anyone given thought to the fact that maybe the younger sister is telling the truth and that, if her older sister is murdered, will probably spend a lifetime of self-blame for obeying the kidnapper and not telling her parents sooner? What a terrible burden on that poor child will bear for the rest of her life.....

That is a horribly depressing thought. I hope this is not the case and the girl is found unharmed.

Yes! Here in Oregon we had two young (15ish) girls from the same apt. building within one month last March dissapear.
The news channel had an interview with the second girl on file talking about what she thought of the first girls disappearance(sp). Then she herself showed up missing a month later. Same Apt. building.
Both families have been very active. From Amer. Most Wanted Tv Show to putting up a billboard out on Interstate 5.
Nothing has turned up.
The girls were on the same drill/dance team but were not close buddies.
