ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- The federal government acknowledged Friday that an untold number of U.S. military service members took "souvenir" photographs of John Walker Lindh during the first days of his captivity, but it added that the images were destroyed because they were taken without military approval.

Randy L. Bellows, an assistant U.S. attorney, made the acknowledgment during a hearing in federal court here in which Lindh's defense attorneys had hoped to obtain copies of the photographs and videos. The defense sought to use them as potential evidence that Lindh was intimidated and coerced into making allegedly incriminating statements to U.S. authorities after he was captured late last year fighting for the Taliban in Afghanistan.

With digital photography this is a pointless and impossible to enforce order.

By the time this order was given I am sure many copies of the photographs had been emailed to relatives at home.

Johnnie Lindh Laden should have never made it to court.........he should be grateful all the GI's shot was his photo. Terrorism is a war where no prisioners should be taken, regardless of potential intelligence collection value.

Anyone in the company of a known terrorist group, caught in the act, should be merely a number in a large body count versus court docket case number whatever.......Just my personal opinion of course.

With terrorism the US must take draconian measures or live under bunker mentality rules as we see in Israel ect ect........

At that time, Lindh was being roundly derided in the United States as the so-called American Talib soldier who had betrayed his country and gone to Afghanistan to work on behalf of the Al Qaeda terrorist network.

What do they mean "At that time"? We are still roundly deriding him as the American Taliban. The only difference is, our initial anger has cooled, but we still know he's a traitor and we STILL want him punished. His citizenship should be revoked and he should never be permitted to step foot on American soil again as long as he lives.

In my opinion, Walker had one chance to prove he was an American. If, upon capture, he was forthcoming and helpful, he should have been transferred to an intel unit until they didn't need him any more, then a ticket home.

If he was an unhelpful jerk, then a quick trip to the wall for Northern Alliance justice.

This whole trial is unseemly.
