How Dissident "Catholic" Groups are Trying to Make Gains from the Scandal

On EWTN radio this morning, I heard a program called "Living His Life Abundantly" with Johnnette Benkovic. Some of you may be familiar with this program. Johnnette's guest today was Mary Jo Anderson, a business woman and mother who turned reporter in response to attacks on the Church from within. What she had to say on today's show was very disturbing and contained a lot of information I had never heard before. Here's the blurb on the show from the LHLA web site:

Check it out if you have a chance. Ms. Anderson singled out a group known as "Call to Action" which is planning to have a major presence at the upcoming bishops' conference in Dallas. They are apparently 'gay-friendly', pro-priestess, and furthermore are trying to use the scandal to pry open the celibacy issue. Perhaps some area Freepers could show up and protest them. Also, it might not be a bad idea to start barraging some of these people with some "dissent" letters of our own.

I propose that we use this thread as a storehouse of information on such dissenting groups -- who they are and what they're doing. I'll start by posting a little blurb on 'Call to Action' based on some internet research. I encourage others to add what they know.

I'd really like to believe this is what they want to teach.

Having a huge bevy of active homosexual priests in the Church (who are, among other things, responsible for teaching Catholic sexual morality) is an enormous hypocrisy. It's like having a bunch of priests who are pornographers, or a bunch of priests who never forgive, or a bunch of priests who never go to Church. It's crazy.

It's fascinating that many of these liberal dissident "Catholic" organizations and celebrity heretic personalities are well-known in the media while there generally has been very little public exposure for orthodox and conservative Catholics. Many liberals know who Charles Curran, Richard McBrien, Bernardin, Matthew Fox, Sr. Maureen Fiedler, Frances Kissling, Andrew Greeley, and Robert Drinan are. Beyond EWTN, orthodox Catholics other than the Pope get very little secular media coverage - as if they don't exist. There is a tendency to make it seem like the majority of Catholics favor the most extreme liberal and dissident positions. As with secular American politics, the exaggerated emphasis on extreme and fringe liberals creates a distorted impression of their significance and relevance. Fortunately, the graying of Catholic liberals will eventually catch up with them or they will be taken out in other ways as in the case of the pompous and overbearing Rembert Weakland.

Actually,the worst of it is past. Most of the offending priests have are retired or put under wraps. These lawsuits almost all refer to things done 20-30 years ago. The scandal now is becaue the few rotten bishops ran out of funds for hush money. And Rome does not keep Stalinist-complete control on the Dioceses; Rome does not micromanage them, nor does it have a gang of undercover informants in the manner of the government of a State. Even the seminaries are being cleaned out and look, the "Catholic" colleges are up against it now, to be either Catholic or drop the name and ties. However, those of a certain mind about Catholics or perhaps about Christians see this all primarily as a chance to bring the Church low, or to bring Religion low, or whatever. For such people the "the Church is all fags" is just another in their aerenal of slogans and does not relate to reality and certainly not to knowledge.

I don't believe it. We keep reading about seminaries where HALF of the seminarians are homosexual, where a great many of those (the majority) engage in active homosexuality, and where many of them flaunt their homosexuality. Along with that goes a complete repudiation of the Church's teaching on sexuality. - I do agree that Rome doesn't keep Stalinist control over the semiaries or the Bishops. The problem is they don't keep ANY control. The have allowed the Church here to become an active queer Church. And I don't see any indication that they have the guts or resolve to fix that.

Solemn Warning! The following organizations are those who claim to be Catholic but dissent from the Truth as handed down from Jesus Christ, Second Person of the Most Blessed Trinity, the Divine Word, to His Apostles and their successors, the Pope and the Magisterium. These organizations are truly following in the footsteps of JUDAS - Just Undermine Doctrine And Spirituality. While they claim to be Catholic, they promote a man-made religion of unfettered pro-sin "choice" by the individual answerable to no one but himself (herself for the feminist reader), while promoting the spirituality of pagans. We all know what the serpent said to Eve; "you shall be as Gods" (Genesis 3:5).

At the same time, their mission statements and goals are disguised in shrewd words, usually in terms of "rights," "equality" and "social justice." But the Bible warns us of such a state of affairs; "I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves [clergy] will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert" (Acts 20:29-31). "And what I do I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is not strange if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds" (2 Corinthians 11:12-15). "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit" (Matthew 7:15-18).

Organization Comments
A Call to Action The most visible dissenting group which is a movement of laity and religious seeking to reform the "sinful structure" of the "patriarchal" Church. CTA is infamous since its 1994 conference coverage on the CBS news program 60 Minutes. CTA promotes dissent against Church teachings on a broad front, including women's ordination, homosexuality, creation spirituality, married priesthood, and liturgical reforms, while incorporating new age and Wiccan spirituality. Bishop Bruskewitz excommunicated those that belong to this group in his Diocese. Many members belong to local  groups called "small faith communities." Renew 2000 also promotes small faith communities. Membership draws heavily from former clergy, feminist nuns, and homosexuals. Members staff COR. CTA serves on the national task force for the We Are Church referendum. Get a more complete understanding of their position from their own information.
Association for the Rights of Catholics in the Church Promotes a so-called "democratic" church whereby the people vote for their own doctrine, and support of pluralism ("believe what you want") via a "Constitution" and a "Catholic Bill of Rights." (Vatican II already gave us a Constitution.) Sample "rights" include self-determined divorce and remarriage, contraception, and homosexual relationships. Also calls for elected pastors, bishops, and pope. Part of the task force of the We Are Church referendum. Most members also are members of CTA. Membership draws heavily from ex-clergy, and disaffected nuns. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal. Protestant churches are "democratic."
Association of Pittsburgh Priests Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Catholics for a Free Choice (CFFC) Promotes artificial contraceptive "rights," including abortion. Their focus is the "intersection of Catholic teaching and public policy." Bishop Bruskewitz excommunicated those that belong to this group in his Diocese. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal. They have been condemned by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB).
Catholics Speak Out Advocate of homosexuality and artificial birth control. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal and a sub-group of the Quixote Center.
Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA) Promotes dissent against Magisterial teachings and questions the authority of said teachings. A "theological wasteland" according to Bernard Cardinal Law (June 18, 1997).
Celibacy Is the Issue Promotes active sacramental ministry for former priests who are now married. Administers a "Rent-A-Priest" program providing former priests for parishes without a priest, or to perform marriages not sanctioned by the Church (i.e. homosexual "marriages") and to conduct illicit Masses. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) Not an organization per se, but a conference center for seminars and workshops working with the Enneagram -- an occult system of personality assessment. CAC features dissident speakers at its seminars and training workshops. Active in fostering dissident networking: "We envision CAC as a faith alternative to the dominant consciousness."
Coalition of Concerned Canadian Catholics Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Conference for Catholic Lesbians Advocate of female homosexuality.
Core Of Retired Priests United for Service (CORPUS) Former priests who advocate married priests. Most are married, and they perform illicit priestly ministries. Their founder Padovano is a prominent figure in Call To Action. CORPUS was instituted to provide support and fraternal affiliation for former priests. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Dignity USA Advocate of homosexual "rights," including "marriage" within the Church. They form local chapters to provide "spiritual" support for practicing homosexuals who want to pursue full sacramental participation and ministerial duties. Vehemently opposed to COURAGE, the homosexual support organization promoting abstinence. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Federation of Christian Ministries Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Fellowship of Southern Illinois Laity A group which proposes Church reform in Call to Action style. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
FutureChurch A regional parish-based coalition seeking to address the priest shortage. FutureChurch claims the remedy is the ordination of married men and women. FutureChurch engages in educational presentations to parishes, grass-roots organizations, and the media. Its current project is a nationally-promoted dialogue on an "inclusive priesthood." Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Jesus Seminar A seminar in which we are supposedly to learn what Jesus "really meant" in the Gospels. Much material follows the modernist liberal dissenting views which go against Church teachings.
National Coalition Of American Nuns Bills itself as a "grassroots" organization for nuns concerned with "sinful structures" of society and church. Members work as advocates for social justice causes and promoting equality of women. Promotes gender-adjusted language, women's ordination, etc. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries (NACDLGM) An organization trying to keep a lower profile, they err by failing to (i.e. oppress) provide the truth of the Church teachings. Rather, they promote documents which are not formal Church teaching, such as that titled 'Always Our Children.' They state "As baptized persons, lesbian and gay Catholics share the rights of all the baptized: 'to receive the sacraments, to be nourished with the Word of God and to be sustained by the other spiritual helps of the Church' (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1269)." However, they do not indicate that chastity is required, nor that active homosexuality is not acceptable whatsoever, nor that gays and lesbians living in sin are not eligible for the Sacraments except Confession/Reconciliation and repentance.
New Ways Ministries Militant advocate of homosexuality which also demands ordination and ministry for homosexuals. Primary effort is educational workshops and seminars to identify and eliminate "homophobia" in the Church. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Pax Christi
(cited in Renew 2000)
This group may be the most widely recognized leftist organization to American Catholics. Long a proponent of nonviolence, Pax Christi promotes "action to transform structures of society." Aligned with liberation theology, "ecological justice," and the usual litany of modernist demands. A member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Priests for Equality Promotes women priests ("priestesses") and married priests. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal and a sub-group of the Quixote Center. Also pursuing inclusive language Scripture translation.
Promises A small group devoted to support women intimately involved with a Catholic priest. A member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Quixote Center Pursues the full range of "peace and justice" issues. The Quixote Center, promotes liberation theology in this hemisphere. The Quixote Center, opposed to U.S. foreign policy, frequently poses as the "Catholic" voice to the media on U.S. involvement in Latin America. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal. Quixote Center is the parent group for Priests for Equality and Catholics Speak Out.
Sex Information and Education Council for the United States (SIECUS)

("education" organization dealing with religion)

From their own manifesto: "..integrates wisdom about sexuality ...; full inclusion of women and sexual minorities in the congregational life, including their ordination and blessing of same sex unions; sexuality counseling ... commitment to sexual and reproductive rights, including access to voluntary contraception, abortion ..." They have promoted a "Religious Declaration in Sexual Morality, Justice and Healing" which has been approved by several Catholic dissenters.
Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) Schismatic group formerly headed by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre who illicitly consecrated bishops against the expressed instructions of the Roman Pontiff. They refuse to submit in obedience to the Holy Father. Note: the leadership of this group seems to be working with the Vatican to end its schism. Let us all hope and pray that this comes to pass.
True Catholic Sedevacantist group which has "elected a Pope Pius XIII" and promotes documents such as "101 Heresies of John Paul II." They refuse to submit in obedience to the Holy Father.
We are Church Hatched from Call to Action, they are a petition group pushing for radical changes in church teaching through political pressure ("referendums," lobbying and the like).
Women-Church Promotes women priests ("priestesses").
Women's Ordination Conference (WOC) WOC promotes women priests ("priestesses"). WOC is characterized by strong language denouncing "the patriarchal church" and the papacy of John Paul II. WOC leaders have suggested "new" sacraments that mark stages in a woman's life. Example: "Sacrament of Croning" at age fifty to herald the coming of "Wisdom." A recent WOC conference claimed ordination meant subordination; consequently, ordination needs to be Reconstructed. It is not unusual for WOC meetings to begin with an invocation to a pagan goddess, and may feature a pagan ritual meal. Member of Catholic Organizations for Renewal.
Women's Ordination Worldwide (WOW) Promotes women priests ("priestesses").
Women in Church Leadership (WICL) Promotes women priests ("priestesses").
Women's Alliance for Theology Ethics and Ritual (WATER) Emphasis is on "inclusiveness," in liturgy and re-interpretation of the Scriptures to the radical feminist view.
Catholic Organizations for Renewal (COR) Not an organization per se, but a forum where many dissenting organizations plot their attack on the teachings of Jesus' Church. Their proclaimed mission is:
  • a coalition of Catholic groups, inspired by Vatican II, [an indicator of the modernist "spirit of Vatican II" - see one member below with that name]
  • to further the reform and renewal of the Catholic Church, and [Martin Luther also "reformed" the church and established a church of man based on his personal beliefs - all heretics have done so in the past. Why is COR any different?]
  • to bring about a world of justice and peace, reflecting the sacredness of all creation." [sacred creation is a pagan belief; true peace and justice result from following God's teachings, not opposing them]

Or did they consider, now that school is out, staying in a couple of dorms at the University of Dallas and meet in Lynch Hall?

I've never stayed at a Fairmont; my company makes me stay at Hampton Inns.

At a time like this, with kleig lights focused on them, the Catholic Bishops of the United States are going to be staying at the most exclusive hotel in Dallas?

You know, we could make good money by emulating baseball cards and issuing AmChurch heretic cards. Unflattering photo on the front. Grisly career details on the back. We could detail stats on convictions and lawsuit payouts. We could balance this by issuing Catholic cards too but the set would be a little small, all things considered, if we are going to rely on hierarchy at this time.

This is great stuff. Here's some other information I collected about the Call to Action creeps and their offshoots. I think it's time to turn up the heat on these people.

Article on Call to Action on the Defend Life website.

Here are some excerpts:

Mary Joe Anderson attended the 1995 CTA convention in Chicago [Bernadin again?] ... and her summary of that event (Crisis Magazine, Feb., 1996) is a scathing indictment. The opening address by CORPUS' Anthony Padovano set the tone by proclaiming, "If the institutional church won't meet our needs we'll do it ourselves. We're not asking permission anymore." According to Anderson, Padovano told CTA members they were "called to heal the body of Christ wounded by structures of domination." Padovano considers that "pathologic popes" such as Gregory VII, Innocent III and Boniface VIII imposed such structures on the Church. A 'former' priest himself, he suggested initiating impeachment proceedings against John Paul II; his exhortation to "rock the barque of Peter" brought thunderous applause.

Anderson ... noted a preponderance of pagan/goddess ware. The Alabaster Jar, a book relating the marriage of Jesus to Mary Magdalene, made an appearance on the tables. Most chilling is Anderson's analysis of CTA's future. They are confident of victory, she says, because "they know that the vast majority of Catholics are uncatechized and vulnerable to manipulation by appeals to the imputed 'spirit' of Vatican II. The CTA regulars are manic, bright, and entrenched in diocese around the country. They demand a reconfigured, demasulinized God so they can be free to release their inner divinity. They will serve no God but the God made in their image.


Is anyone else as angry as I am? It's time to CLEAN HOUSE! We've put up with these aging phonies long enough!

I thought Renew 2000 was an official activity in conjunction with the Jubilee 2000. A gentleman I know in the diocesan office asked me to go through the facilitator training but I didn't. I never did figure out what that was all about.
