The director of the FBI is facing allegations from one of the bureau's lawyers that he twisted the truth to hide failings by senior agents that could have prevented the September 11 attacks.

He was acting deputy attorney general, not with the FBI. So, because Fineswine says he's a good man, that automatically means that he's not?

This search for someone to blame is getting a little ridiculous. There is no way, even if they would have acted on the memo as soon as it arrived in DC that they would have had enough time to investigate and even then may not have had enough to arrest them. Given the amount of time it takes the INS to come up with info on people who are here illegally, it would have taken a minimum of 60 days to even find out their visas had expired.

I assume you think it's OK to just go out and arrest people (pre-911) because you think maybe they might be planning something? Do you really believe they would have been able to pull that off? The ACLU would have filed a lawsuit and they would have been out on bail when they hit the Trade Center.

BLAME THE TERRORISTS! You're a vet, don't you think it's kind of a dumb time to be picking a fight with someone who is busy guarding your back in the middle of a fire fight?

God bless Coleen Rowley for her courage. I hope she does not meet with an "unfortunate accident".

Frasca, Mueller, and anyone else proved to be involved in this dreadful mess should be fired yesterday.

I hope that weasel Freeh enjoys having the blood of 3000 people on his hands. He should be stripped of his pension and sent to prison to room with his Opus Dei buddy, Hansen.

The excuse you and others are trying to use is that Mueller dropped in from no place and didnt know anything about anything untill he was sworn in a FBI director.

That is not true and the fact he was Acting Deputy director proves he didnt just drop out into DC one day and a few days later a tragidy happened.

Look Mueller is a cover up guy...Have you ever heard of BCCI? Like it or not Mueller is not the man that need to be FBI Director and never was.

In case you didnt know it...the government has said it is not matter of if but when more attacks happen, even AFTER they expanded their power, kept and promoted Clinton holdovers and swore Mueller in. The fact that Mueller is also covering for the Clinton Administration, Reno and Freeh just to name a few shows there is no accountablity in Washington.

So when should that stop? After another 3,000 people are dead? According to you and others they should never be held accountable and that is asking for trouble.

And you know this for a fact? You have proof? If that's the case then you're responsible for 9-11 too. After all, if you would have done your duty and brought this to the attention of the administration, all those deaths could have been avoided.

Well, that solves the problem of who to blame, it's your fault.

Does anyone know when Mueller took over the FBI Directors job?

September 10, 2001. That is why this story does not make sense. How could he have skewed facts if he was there only one day before 911?

Nice to know you would rather blame me than those in charge of the government that failed to do the most important job they have...PROTECTING AMERICA

The terrorists did the deed....and it is starting to look like the government inabled them by their incompetence.

Well, you got it half right. The terrorists did the deed. As to blaming America, I find that as repulsive as I found the people who spit on our military when they came home from Vietnam.

Apprarently my comments went right over your head. YOU are claiming to have certain knowledge about Mueller. Care to tell me what the difference is if you DID have certain knowledge and didn't stop his confirmation? How is that any different from what you are accusing him of? Or the FBI of?

I have no doubts that mistakes were made. I also have no doubts that things will be fixed as quickly as you can possibly fix a cumbersome government agency. But I'm sick of people pointing the finger inward when we are in the middle of a fight for our lives.

The terrorists love reading this stuff, they love seeing us tear each other apart rather then concentrate on finding them. There are a lot of good agents in the FBI, let them do their duty. They are seriously understaffed, they have tons of Clinton appointees in middle management slots, and it's almost impossible to fire a government employee. The good guys don't need to worry about covering their back while they're trying to stop the terrorists.

Your screen names says you're a vet. Tell me, would you have picked a fight with your team while you were in the middle of a firefight? Or would you wait until you got back to base?

You quote a WSJ story which notes a bunch of stuff, basically asking a bunch of questions. For example, it notes that Mueller should be judged in part on his "success or lack thereof" in reforming the ND Cal. USAO office when he was sent there to reform it. ?? But reform it he did!! He did a complete management overhaul there.

Re BCCI, I really don't know the details. But there's nothing in the WSJ editorial which indicates he was covering up for anyone there.

Ashcroft kept him by his side for a while before nominating him. I do think the fact that Ashcroft and Mueller work well together bodes well for Mueller's tenure too. And I trust Ashcroft's judgment.

Re your post #27, I guess there's not much in it I disagree with. At least we are both praying he'll be successful. Re the vet posting, basically saying I don't know him well. Well, hmmm, about that, I would say: I disagree. :) And leave it at that.

God's will will be revealed. I believe him to be a loyal servant. Let's not witch-hunt the guy just yet.

US attorneys routinely try homicide cases?

Before going to N.D. California and doing a great job of a management overhaul there, Bob Mueller, a former (and therefore always) Marine, was the head of homicide at the D.C. U.S. Attorney's office (which also handles local cases, and therefore homicides). And before that, he was a line homicide prosecutor. This is true. Might I add a good one.

The idea of a government lawyer being "tough as nails" is enough to make a cow laugh.

Bob Mueller was a marine. And a homicide prosecutor. And he was and I assume is tough as nails. And before you make too much hay about government lawyers not being tough as nails, remember you -- I do charge you to remember -- Barbara Olson. She worked in the same D.C. U.S. Attorney's Office as when Bob Mueller was there. And they were both tough as nails. I wonder how many of these people throwing empty beer bottles at Bob Mueller in cyberspace have worked so hard and loyally for their country. At the end of the day, it's readily apparent some of you guys just want to whine and assume the worst. I think, from the sound of things, you'd be honestly disappointed if he was a tough-as-nails ex-Marine ex-homicide prosecutor? Even the possibility that that might be true leads to these summary denials. Sigh. I'm outta here. Anyone who wants to join me in a more patriotic and optimistic thread, lead the way!
