David Frasca, head of the FBI's radical fundamentalist unit in Washington, has been identified as the agent who received memos from Minneapolis and Phoenix, Arizona, that should have alerted him to the al-Qa'eda plot.

Like we are getting otherwise from the New York Times a spinned picture of a legal SNAFU is being painted.

Mueller was the head of the BCCI investigation in Bush I. Remember that one? No doubt he was put in place for a reason.

Does anyone know when Mueller took over the FBI Directors job?

Due to the Senate it was Sept 4, one week before. How would anyone in his position know the FBI morons that lied to Congress under Clintoon were telling the truth about 9/11?

People make it sound like Freeh was never in the job, where the cultural problems, moral rot and dishonesty set in.

Once a liar it is hard to break the habit. If you think about it, this is why the lying Clinton crowd was so bad for the counrty. Do you think Clintoon would demand the re-org? or just tell us all is well (ignore the sucking sound).

Mueller has his work cut out for him.

FBI chief 'twisted truth over Sept 11'
By Toby Harnden in Washington
(Filed: 28/05/2002)

The director of the FBI is facing allegations from one of the bureau's lawyers that he twisted the truth to hide failings by senior agents that could have prevented the September 11 attacks.

Robert Mueller, who took over the FBI two weeks before September 11, is under intense pressure from Congress to respond to a letter from Special Agent Coleen Rowley, the FBI's chief lawyer in Minneapolis.

If FBI headquarters had acted on intelligence gathered lower down, she claimed, "it's at least possible we could have gotten lucky and uncovered one or two more of the terrorists in flight training prior to September 11".

Miss Rowley, an FBI agent for 21 years, said the bureau had "omitted, downplayed, glossed over and/or mischaracterised" her office's investigation of Zacarias Moussaoui, the alleged "20th hijacker" who was arrested a month before the attacks.

She had deep concerns, she said, "that a delicate shading/skewing of facts by you [Mr Mueller] and others at the highest levels of management has occurred and is occurring".

Her letter, written under the protection of a whistleblower statute, was delivered to Capitol Hill last week and will add weight to calls for an independent commission into the lessons of September 11.

Congressional investigators claim that crucial fragments of information came together in the FBI's Washington headquarters but the connections between them were not made.

David Frasca, head of the FBI's radical fundamentalist unit in Washington, has been identified as the agent who received memos from Minneapolis and Phoenix, Arizona, that should have alerted him to the al-Qa'eda plot.

A Phoenix FBI agent sent him a memo on July 10, 2001, giving warning that terrorists were training at Arizona flight schools. Moussaoui was arrested on August 15 after a Minneapolis school reported suspicions. He faces the death penalty if convicted of terrorist charges.

With the focus of debate over the missed intelligence opportunities before September 11 moving away from the White House and back towards the FBI and CIA, Mr Mueller's job will be on the line if he cannot answer Miss Rowley's charges.

Her central allegation is that FBI officials systematically blocked requests from her field office for permission to obtain a warrant to search Moussaoui's computer.

Wonder if it's Coleen Rowley's lawyer?

I guess the daily "What did Bush know and when did he know it" posts will now be replaced with [newbie greenhorn, only appointed to post two months before 9-11] Mueller "Knew it, but skewed it" posts?

Bob Mueller is a good and honest man, tough-as-nails, who used to, among other things, try homicides! Very sturdy person. Have to be tough as nails to do that job as an AUSA. The FBI is also a good agency which has had leadership/management problems but has fine, fine people in its ranks. Bob Mueller just got there.

Perhaps it would be wiser and more appropriate to join ranks and support his claim for reform. Perhaps more weird Waco conspiracy theories is not what we need right now. Well, let the flame wars begin, that's my position and I'm sticking with it. Sincerely, Someone Who Also Has Earned the Right to Be Called Tough As Nails.

I am always skeptical of claims that a person is doing a good job or should be kept in office on the basis of their past good conduct or even heroics. A good example is John McCain.

"Does anyone know what Freeh is doing now?"

Now THAT is what I would like to know.

Freeh, who presided over the 1993 bombing of the WTC, Waco, Oklahoma City, Ruby Ridge, Elian and Atlanta just CONVENIENTLY decides to take retirement a couple of years early...AT THE TIME that the vague warning was recieved. Coincidence? Sure. Riiight.

What did FREEH know and when did he know it?

"Bob Mueller just got there."

I'LL FLAME YA!! ...I'LL FLAMIN' AGREE WITH YOU!! Oh...that's not the kind of flame you meant. Note to self "NO MORE COFFEE FOR YOU TODAY!!"

Let me tell you why the Meuller bashing by the Bashbot crowd will now start in earnest:

79 percent of people polled do NOT think Mueller should resign.

That explains it all. Same pattern of bashing behavior as with Bush.

Robert Mueller wasn't even appointed until July.

Some people, and that includes some FReepers, are BOUND AND DETERMINED to find SOMETHING with which to bash the Bush Administration, whether it has to be manufactured or not.

Do you also believe in the Tooth Fairy?

It doesn't matter a whit how long Mueller was "on the job". He clearly tried to cover his or someone's ass. Read the Rowley memo.

BTW, have you heard that retired FBI agent John Connolly was convicted today of charges of obstruction of justice, bribery abd racketeering in Boston?

A good agency? Waco, Ruby Ridge, Robert Hansen, Wen Ho Lee, Richard Jewell, Timothy McVeigh, FBI files in the White House, the young man shot in the face in the Baltimore suburbs, etc., etc.,. Sure.

"It doesn't matter a whit how long Mueller was "on the job". He clearly tried to cover his or someone's ass. Read the Rowley memo"

I read "the Rowley memo", and except for the part where she states that her involvement with the Maoussaui case was trivial, the memo NOTHING BUT CONJECTURE. "I believe" this, "I believe some of my information comes from you and other sources", "I believe that", "I believe"....

I was giving her the benefit of the doubt before I read that memo, even though I felt her methods were extremely inappropriate and self serving. Oh, and who is this guy "Everyone" whom "AG Ashcroft" supposedly accused of being a traitor? Lets see agent "Everyone" step forward and CONFIRM this allegation.

Simpler still: Disband the incompetent and for that matter extra-constitutional FBI.
