Oregon Primary Results - (5/21/2002)
KATU-TV ^ | 5/21/2002 | TV

Limited results on the web so far, but KATU is giving early results on their site and on TV. So far, it looks like it will be a very close race between Kevin Mannix and Ron Saxton for the Republican gubernatoria nomination. Roberts is trailing a bit behind the other two.

Sadly, it looks like Susan Castillo, the union thug candidate will get a majority to take the Superintendent of Public Instruction position.

Booquist will face off with Darlene Hooley in Dist. 5. I would much rather have had Schelske.

For those of you in Metro (I'm not), it looks like a mixed bag. The anti-densification measure was defeated, and Metro's sham measure was approved, but it looks like there will be a runoff between Kate Schiele and David Bragdon for Metro President.

Well, I gotta turn in...*yawn*

Looks like it's gonna be Mannix. That's better than Saxton winning, anyhow.

Who knows...maybe Mannix can run a decent campaign. I'd sure like to see him win in November.

Incidentally, Multnomah County has their final numbers up, and Saxton only barely beat out Mannix (35-32%) in this liberal county, so I don't think he ever stood much chance statewide.

I don't see any coverage of Eastern Oregon at KATU. I'm wondering if their counts even bother to include the east side numbers.

Actually also wonder if our courthouse even bothers to count until morning.

Mannix, Kulongoski ahead
---->

PORTLAND - By BRAD CAIN
Associated Press Writer

Republican Kevin Mannix jumped out to a slim early lead over Ron Saxton Tuesday in the hard-fought Republican governor's race in which the GOP's social conservatives appeared to be putting Mannix over the top.

With 55 percent of the votes counted, Mannix, a former legislator, had garnered 34 percent of the vote to 30 percent for Saxton, a Portland attorney and former Portland school board member. State Labor Commissioner Jack Roberts was trailing with 29 percent.

In the Democratic race, former Supreme Court Justice Ted Kulongoski held a comfortable lead over former Multnomah County chairwoman Bev Stein and former state Treasurer Jim Hill.

Kulongoski was leading with 50 percent of the vote to Hill's 25 percent and Stein's 22 percent.

The national Democratic and Republican parties are closely watching the Oregon gubernatorial race, one of 36 across the country.

In the Republican race, Mannix and Saxton were neck-in-neck in the polls in the campaign's final days, with both leading Roberts.

Mannix was able to pull even with Saxton in the polls in part because of social conservatives' threats to back a third-party spoiler candidate against Saxton in the fall.

Mannix ran as a populist Republican, though over the years he's been at odds with trial lawyers, gay rights activists and pro-abortion rights groups for pushing a pro-traditional-family, get-tough-on-crime agenda.

Saxton began the race as the lesser known of the three, with his years on the Portland School Board serving as his only public office experience.

Saxton tried to use that to his advantage, saying he's the only contender who's not a "career politician," and that he's the only one seriously talking about reducing the cost of the public employee retirement system.

Roberts promoted himself as the GOP candidate with the best chance of winning back the governor's office for Republicans for the first time in 20 years. Roberts, a political moderate, has served two terms as state labor commissioner.

On the Democratic side, Kulongoski gained momentum early on with the endorsement of the popular Kitzhaber and with the backing of the Oregon AFL-CIO.

Kulongoski, who ran for governor in 1982, said his 20 years in statewide politics gave him the experience the next governor will need to lead the state out of its current economic doldrums.

Stein, a former state legislator, said the strong grassroots campaign network she put together around Oregon demonstrated her ability to pull people together on such issues as finding a new revenue source for schools.

Hill, the first black to win statewide office in Oregon, said his tenure as the state treasurer gave him the fiscal experience that the next governor will need.

No, you can thank Slade Gorton for his vote against impeachment.
