I looked up any possible reasons for that in this circumstance. The only thing I could surmise was that McKinney is involved in campaigns to stop logging (especially the Sierra Nevadas, go figure), and she's against the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Dumpsite. If that explains her out of state contributions, fine. But the dates don't add up, seeing Yucca is a post-9/11 issue.

Anytime a congressperson is on any of the really important committees, it is probable that he/she will receive monies from all over the place - people representing various causes and the like. If she's on the House Intelligence Committee (did I hear that correctly?) then that would explain some things, for sure.

I don't pretend to know anything about how this data is gathered, except that it's done by the government. The contributors probably are required to fill out some sort of form, then some clerk enters the data, and some Database Administrator maintains it.

As a former congressional campaign committee treasurer myself, I *do* know how this data is gathered. It is the burden of the campaign committee to gather up all the contribution details and submit them on a quarterly basis to the FEC. If the campaign committee fails to submit these within the deadline period, the committee can be found in non-compliance and would be subject to heavy fines, violation of the law, etc. If there is any MISSING information from a donor (address, contributor's occupation), it is the burden of the campaign committee to file an amended report with said information included.

The information available on-line at the FEC's own website (from which OpenSecrets.org gleans its information) is simply a SCAN changed into a .pdf of those exact same forms submitted by the candidate's campaign committee. In other words, if there was any falsifying to be done, it'd happen at the campaign committee level.

My apologies for the double post - I hit the back button on the browser to double-check on some things here in the original thread, and ended up hitting the post button again. Oops! (This apology, though, is a good excuse to bump this thread, isn't it? :-}

>>>Cynthia McKinney is inarguably the most IGNORANT person ever to serve in the House of Representative....Who could possibly disagree?<<<

She is backed by my step-sister who lives in Atlanta. She is the most ignorant step-sister I have!!!

Net net - your right about Cynthia, and I'm right about my step-sister. She's not even a good cook!

As a former congressional campaign committee treasurer myself

Finally, someone who knows. So does this McKinney business stink to the high heavens, or am I just nuts?

Yes, I used to be more up on the regs than I am now. When I was doing the FEC filings it was nearly 2 decades ago, but the basics about the quarterly filings and the information needed (accounting of all proceeds and expenditures) hasn't really changed that much, I don't think, in the last 20 years.

And yes, this donor list REALLY smells to high heaven.

One more point - it is basically the campaign treasurer whose neck would be on the line. The campaign treasurer's signature is the one that goes on the submitted reports. And, essentially, the treasurer is the one who is attesting that all information contained in the reports is factual.

McK's ACLU rating 100%

There is no greater evidence of pure evil than this statistic right here.

Thanks, Bob.

That's it? The honor system?

What stops them from underreporting, overreporting, changing names, etc?

How about the cancelled checks and/or wire-trail (credit card)?

Similarly, FEC reports filed by campaign committees are fully subject, by law, to audit. In other words, there must be a verifiable money trail to follow (receipts, cancelled checks, credit card transactions, etc.).

Every donor's contribution is noted with a receipt. A copy of that receipt is kept with the campaign books for the audit purposes I mentioned above.

And......... if this information were untrue as published by the FEC, would it not be in McKinney's and/or her campaign treasurer's best interests to state that this information is false?!!!!!!

So far, they have not done so, since the information is no doubt undeniably true and factual.

Go here and do the search in FEC for yourself.

OK, never mind. I'll go ahead and post the shortcut link here for Filings by "Cynthia McKinney for Congress" - C00256354.

This is the report (HTML version) in question which noted the contributions in the Sept. window. This is the downloadable version.

(Find out sometime why Rush mostly stopped talking about Foster. It isn't because he doesn't suspect foul play.)

Sadly, I lack the advanced math degrees with which to connect these unruly dots. I give up. Why did Rush stop talking about Foster??

Sadly, I lack the advanced math degrees with which to connect these unruly dots. I give up. Why did Rush stop talking about Foster??

Rush stopped talking about Foster because he began a show talking about a report that Foster had been killed at some apartment used by the Arkansas folks and then dumped at FMP. This was the "Smiek Johnson" (SP?) rumor apparently confirmed by Senator Moynahan's office. By one o'clock Rush was already reporting that this report wasn't true, or at least well founded. It didn't matter. Jeff Cohen's FAIR (sic) group took out full page newspaper ads and grabbed whatever free time he could demagoguing Rush and his credibility. Rush was very much on the defensive, and was forced to issue his own point by point response to Cohen's ad.

The connection to this discussion is that it is dangerous to repeat reports or data of questionable veracity because it is difficult to anticipate how use of such material will be used against us. In the Foster case, it doesn't matter that he didn't commit suicide as Rush was suggesting, just that he repeated a rumor about where Foster was killed which was not well documented (but still might be true). I'm not sure, but Rush might tell you that this incident was the most serious politcal threat his show has faced since it began in 1988.
