WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney will defend the White House later on Thursday in a speech addressing the growing controversy over what President Bush knew about potential threats ahead of the Sept. 11 hijackings, Cheney's office said.
Cheney spokeswoman Jennifer Millerwise said the vice president would address intelligence issues surrounding the hijackings when he speaks at 7:30 p.m. at a dinner of the New York State Conservative Party in New York.
"He's going to be speaking to some of the egregious and irresponsible commentary he's heard today," Millerwise said.
The White House said on Thursday Bush had been briefed in August about potential hijacking threats but said there was no specific information hijackers would try to fly planes into the World Trade Center, Pentagon or similar targets.
The disclosure prompted calls from Democratic and Republican lawmakers for an investigation into possible intelligence failures, and quickly took on a political tone.
"There's a sniff of politics in the air," congressional sources quoted Bush as saying during a visit to the Capitol on Thursday.
smells like burned rats
Cheney is the most effective spokesman in the entire Administration, IMO.
I think he will light a fire under the Rats.
You know who else I'd like to hear from on all this? Rudy. He could easily douse the flames that the media and dems lit with the 9-11 victims families.
They're also pre-empting the Cheney speech by saying that he personally lobbied the House & Senate to shut down a 9-11 investigation before it started.
If Matthews said once 'what did the President know and when did he know it', he said it at least 25 times - and Fineman chimed in with it.
I certainly agree with you about Rudy. Since he's between jobs, he would be perfect for this job. He's also seen as 'non Partisan'. Gordon Liddy did an excellent job deflecting Matthews criticism.
I think Bush should find out WHO leaked this - and give them the 'Linda Tripp' treatment...you know: 'the person who would turn on a friend is slower than a worm'. Well, the person who would turn on the President in a time of war is worse than .... well, fill in the blank.
Dick will blast them in such a subversive, intelligent way that they won't know they've been blasted for weeks! The man definitely has a way with words.
Totally agree - they should be FIRED IMMEDIATELY!! Also, we need to flood the WH with emails to Chaney to BLAST the RATS in his speech. vice-president@whitehouse.gov This attitude of "turning the other cheek" has resulted in nothing but more and more dirty politics from the RATS. They are like the Arabs - the more you give, the weaker they think you are and continue to attack. IT'S TIME TO GET TOUGH.
Matthews is one of the worst when it comes to hyping a story. He's all about political theater. I remember how appalled I was listening to him during the primaries and how he was suggesting that McCain hit Bush hard on the anti-Catholic stuff. Never mind that it wasn't true - just that it would be a great 'political' move. All just a game for Chrissy boy. I refuse to watch him anymore.
