We had a meeting last night about a particular problem in the New River Gorge Area. I was informed by Mr. DeWeese that he was sent a letter by a County Commissioner, John Aliff, that states that all 3 commissioners for Raleigh County are in "favor" of the New River Gorge Scenic Parkway. This is after he has signed petitions that state he is opposed to and objects to the same parkway he now supports. I have in front of me both the letter and the petition with his signature.
What is the difference? When he signed the petitions, he was running for office. When he issued the letter to Mr. DeWeese, he is an elected county official that has flip-flopped 180 degrees in service to his people.
Action: After you read the letter and the petition verbiage that Mr. Aliff signed, please call, fax, or e-mail Mr. Aliff and ask him to stand behind his original signature. Ask him to be a man.

Dear Mr. DeWeese:
I received the information that you sent concerning the American Policy Center, however, I am a little surprised at the tone of your accompanying letter.
You sir, have no idea of what I have or have not done to help my constituents in the area of the New River Parkway. I find it offensive that you would try to intimidate me with quotes such as "You've only experienced the first wave" and "We have no desire to defame nor make an enemy of you."
All three commissioners are in favor of the New River Parkway and are on record as such, however, we are against the taking of land that is not necessary to construct the parkway.
The New River Parkway Authority was created, not only by the federal government, but by the legislature of the State of West Virginia to construct a parkway to serve Summers, Raleigh, and Mercer Counties in West Virginia. The purpose of the parkway is to bring tourism and increase business opportunities to those counties that are sadly in need of economic development. The parkway is to be funded by the West Virginia Department of Highways with funds provided by the West Virginia Legislator, as well as, by the Congress of the United States. The Raleigh County Commission is not participating in the funding of this parkway.
As you are well aware, if everyone took the position that your organization has taken there would be no highways constructed anywhere in the whole United States, because, it would be impossible to obtain land. [Note: Mr. Aliff is completely misrepresenting the problem here as simply opposing a highway when he knows it is not true.]
[His bold] Again I would like to state that I and my fellow commissioners are in favor of the construction of the New River Parkway, however, we are also opposed to obtaining land that is not necessary to construct the parkway.

We, the landowners, temporary seasonal, residents, friends, families, and/or frequent visitors to the Sandstone Falls area, located on West Virginia State Route 26, commonly referred to as "New River Road" wish to express our concerns and objections to any land acquisitions that would/will deprive our aforesaid friends, families, and land owners of the constitutional rights to own, lease, sell and convey personal private property. Therefore, we the undersigned are in strict objection to the New River Parkway and request that this issue be abandoned immediately!

Call the Secretary of State's office (they certify election results, and should be familiar with recall processes if they exist in your state) and see if your state has the power of recall for elected officials, then find out what the process is.
If the Secretary of State's office can't or won't help, try the County Election Commissioner or the State Election board.
