What do you think are the best military songs of all time? And do you have a personal favorite?
I had a liking for a cadence that had to do with "Killing the Baby Seals".
Also knew a SGT that had a fondness for a cadence:
Whip me beat me I need love
Spank me with your leather glove
Nine inch heels up and down my back
Fish hooks in my scrotum sack
Don't forget your whips and chains
Whip me beat me, I need pain...
He was a twisted f#^ker... But it was always funny to see the looks on the faces of the unsuspecting on those early morning runs...
Dixie.
LOL!!!
I admit, I did a little extra searching to come up with a version that wouldn't get censored by the forum moderators.
But some of the doughboys' more creative efforts are available out there in cyberspace if anybody wants to look 'em up!!!
"Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" by Zevon
"Rooster" by AIC
All rock tunes....I'm not too saavy on actual troop ballads besides Dixie or Johnny Comes Marching Home....
Au contraire, mon frer
Hooray for our flag, hold it high
Let the stars and the stripes tell the story
Of vict'ries our fathers have won in their struggle for liberty
Salute with the roll of the drum
Let the world know our fight for human freedom
Our faith in mankind and the right
America! America! Live on forever.
But "Battle Hymn of The Republic" is still tops!

First the Black Bear Caller Ranock on pipes one of the greatest charge tunes of all time.
Second, each of America's service tunes Anchors Aweigh, Semper Paratus, Marine Corps Hymn, Off We Go Into The Wild Blue Yonder, and The Caisons Go Rolloing Along.
Third, The Minstrel Boy.
Fourth, Gary Owen.
Fifth, Come out you Black and Tan.
Sixth, Britania Rules the Waves (they do not anymore but it was still a good song).
Seventh, La Marsailles.
Eighth, Meadowlands ( The Red Army's marching song.)
Ninth, Ruben James.
Tenth the March of the Corps of Cadets.
Now I would also add my own sentimental favorite "The Four Of Us." I do not not disagree with any of the other selections posted but all of the above should be considered as great military music. Maybe someone would add "Duescheland Uber Alles." Although I am not a big fan of the Third Reich it was martial music that inspired a nation. While we are at it we should add in "Yankee Doodle" the music that gave us our nation. There are a great many other martial tunes that should also be considered and it is probably impossible to list them all.
Stay well - stay safe - Stay armed - Yorktown
I am a good ole rebel now thats just what I am
for this fair land of "freedom" I do not care a damn
I'm proud I fought again' it I only wish we'd won
and I don't want no pardon for anything I done.
300 thousand Yankees lie stiff in southern dust
we got 300 thousand before they conquered us
they died of southern fever, of southern steel and shot
and I wished it was 3 million instead of what we got.
I won't be reconstructed I'm better now than them
and for the carpetbaggers I don't give a damn
so I'm off for the frontier as soon as I can go
I'll prepare a weapon and start for Mexico.
We were not a military family, but an Oil Company Family, but we knew every one of those songs by heart and when we moved back to the states, we were in shock that the radio stations did not have all the songs we recognized twice a day. Too bad, it would do this Nation good to hear those songs twice daily, IMHO, of course.
All the MP3s and RealAudio files you need to make ceremonial music tapes for all branches of the US military. The National Anthem, service songs, Taps, The Stars and Stripes Forever, more. From the USAF Heritage of America Band.
Please, all Air Force personnel, forgive me for leaving you out of an earlier post!!!!!, that was an oversight, a mistake and done in a hurry.
