Yugo Redux
Doug Donovan, 04.23.02, 5:30 PM ET
NEW YORK - A decade has passed since the Yugo was last imported to the United States.
The much-ridiculed discount automobile was discontinued in the U.S. in 1992, but has forever remained an American icon of all things cheap.
Now, the Yugo is back.

I vividly remember the day I was walking through Chicago in January and saw a Yugo stuck in a snow drift on the side of the road. The windows had popped out and on the chipped white paint someone had spray spainted in red paint "FOR GOD'S SAKE, DON'T BUY A YUGO!".
That image will always haunt my mind when I hear the name "YUGO".

I remember a comedy routine about those 'cars' back in the 80's where the comedian said something like a thief was going to steal the radio out of one but felt so sorry for the owner that he left a tape deck in the car instead.
(Had to be there, I guess.)

Auto parts store-
"I'd like to get a gas cap for my Yugo."
"Sounds like a fair trade."

There's a murder-mystery movie still showing on cable - can anyone remember the name? - where absolutely everyone - the cops, the extras, the victim, the murderer, all drive Yugos. It's funny.

Rush can now get more mileage out of his parody...."In a Yugo". A new generation will now know what he speaks of.

I actually owned one of these things back in 1988. I used it to deliver pizza in--in a bad part of town, so I had no worries it would ever be stolen.
I did get it up to 90 mph one time. Never again.

'Drowning Mona' it is. I loved those car chases.

Leno should be happy with the news...he used to do a lot of Yugo jokes. For example, he reported that the owner of a Yugo had been involved in the first "push by" shooting.

I knew a guy with a Yugo GT (oxymoron). It had an ersatz "scoop" on the hood. He painted an arrow pointing towards the scoop and "Insert Coin Here".

Has anyone seen Al Gore in line to buy one?

I had a very serious guy call to our shop looking for air suspension parts that would fit his Yugo.

Got behind one of these "things" at an interstate on-ramp, downhill. We reached at least 35 mph as we tried to merge with traffic going about 75. THAT was an experience! Nearly caused a big-time pileup. Boy was I glad to be in my Suburban.
If I hadn't been behind that little tin-can, traffic would have pushed theYugo out of the way!
