Will you go see StarWars Episode II: Attack of Clones when it is released May 16th?

How do you feel it will measure up to the original trilogy? What did you think of the Phantom Menace? Do you think this film will be better/worse than Phantom Menace?

Honestly? No, I will probably wait until it is released on video. George Lucas lost me with Return of the Jedi, and Episode I pretty much clinched it for me. Why the third and fourth films couldn't be as good as the first two is quite a shame.

Aargh! Although he can't be deader than the princess in PM. I'll go just to see R2D2 and C3PO. They're supposed to be there through all 9 Star War movies and at least *they* are dependable.

I beg to disagree. Here's a reason why: SW was created by George Lucas; LotR by J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien was a genius who invented languages, peoples, invented mythologies out of his own head, and more, was grounded solidly in Western tradition thanks to a proper English education and a devout faith. Lucas is, well, - I don't know about him personally, but the world he created seem to me to be often shallow and worse, grounded on quicksand.

I agree with you in that the Star Wars story would never be able to surpass LOTR as far as being literature goes, but there is no reason that the Star Wars movies could not be made as well as the LOTR movies.

Probably would have been a good start to hire Peter Jackson to direct. ;^)

Besides, Hobbits are infinitely preferable to Ewoks.

Tolkien was a devout Catholic long before Lewis converted. I can't give you any one citation, but any decent biography will have to address his faith. In addition, his Letters are available, and they are often quite Christian. Then again I see his faith as influencing most of what he had written, so it came as no surprise to me to find out he was truly a man of God.

Ok, I agree, her acting wasn't that great in PM, but she sure is easy on the eyes...another reason to go see AOTC :-)

Just in terms of mass appeal, the movie extends the franchise's target audience from 12-year-old boys (the action stuff) to 15-year-old girls (the smoochy scenes). If it works, Lucas has the Star Wars and Titanic markets in one package.

Also, this interesting Lucas quote:

So where does Lucas stand in this political polemic? "I'm more on the liberal side of things," he says. "I grew up in San Francisco in the '60s, and my positions are sort of shaped by that ... If you look back 30 years ago, there were certain issues with the Kennedys, with Richard Nixon, that focused my interest." Lucas' own geopolitics can sound pretty bleak: "All democracies turn into dictatorships—but not by coup. The people give their democracy to a dictator, whether it's Julius Caesar or Napoleon or Adolf Hitler. Ultimately, the general population goes along with the idea ... What kinds of things push people and institutions into this direction?"

I was first in line for the rereleases and left work to get to the first showing of Phanton Menace. I have a large cardboard cutout of Darth Vadar in my Apartment. As a result, women find me very attractive.

I understand Christopher Lee will be in the film. Anybody here remember him from Dracula?

I'm going to drive hundreds of miles so I can see it on one of only 18 digital screens in the nation (it was filmed in digital). I'm going to drag all my little jawas with me.

Over the weekend I succumbed to the new Episode II merchandising (I didn't hold out very long, did I) and bought the Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Trading Card Game expansion pack starter kit to play with my young son. He's been into Pokemon TCG, but I had no interest in them and couldn't see myself playing such cartooney nonsense. I figured we were both Star Wars fans (like father, like son) and this would be a TCG that we both would play and enjoy. So far, it is a hit with both of us.

As Empire Strikes Back was better than ANH.

You are correct. Empire was by far the best of the four films released so far. It is the darkest and most effective of what Lucas calls "The redemption of Anakin Skywalker" trilogy.

Of course I'll go see it. The first three (chronologically) practically defined my generation - there's no reason NOT to see the rest of the story. I'll enjoy it just as much as The Empire Strikes Back.

Ultimately, it's a kids' story. This anti-Jar-Jar vitrol (and other complaints about TPM) comes from people who forgot that their perception of the world changed in the 20+ years since the Star Wars: A New Hope first played. The original episode was not more sophisticated than the latest installment, it just seems that way through a two-decade-old memory of a child's perception contrasted with a cynical adult's view of the same thing. Set your perception back to 12-year-old mode and enjoy the next installment.
