Yes, ammo is probably the prime Y2K survivalist leftover, but I am astonished that no one at the time saw the real marketing opportunity.

Sure, ammo is fine, but what happens when civilization has collapsed so completely that there are no more factories producing it ? Won't you then need weaponry with a bio-replaceable sort of ammo ?

In short, crossbows. Crossbows were the ideal #1 Y2k survivalist accessory and no one saw it. Why, instead of dehydrated corn people could have been selling crossbows hand over fist !

I still have my M-16, bullets and the flamethrower I bought so I could break into people's stockpiles and steal the food that they had put up.

I figure they will still come in handy some day, and bullets don't have an expiration date.

We purchased foodstocks on the basis of turn-over. We use the food as we would any other food and it has worked just fine. We have some surplus of water but that's about it.

With earth quakes, riots and power shortages why use up your stores? Just keep rotating the dates.

I always told people that Y2K was like an earthquake that you knew was coming on a specific date. Turned out there was no damage and now we are ready for the next one.

I didn't buy anything that was wasted.

Of course this is earthquake country, so we need to be prepared at all times.

We still have a good supply of freeze dried (canned) food. Open one up now and then, it's still got 8 years or so shelf life. Lots of ammo, and 3 55 gal plastic drums for water.

Earthquake country you know.

Put a few cases of this in the bunker and you won't want Y2K to be ending anytime soon. Delicious with Carr's Table Water crackers.

Y2K - Earthquakes - Riots - Fires... California sure is fun! Our generator takes up a bit of room in the garage, but after the '94 quake, we knew we needed a bigger one. During that time, we had lights and a little tv, and no one else did, so it was handy. Now we can have a refrigerator and a computer too! The canned food, and gas and water drums are properly and safely stored and rotated as well. Ammo - always handy! Prepared for anything we are!

Gosh I have nothing left. All I bought was a couple of cans of Spam & I donated them to the food drive at church. I am really glad Y2K was a bust, I hate Spam.

I bought some food but I ate it all before Y2K got here.

I ate a lot of extra food before Y2K so I'd have a large reserve of fat to live off of in case of a food shortage. I've still got it, too.

Sometimes you just want that blackout to hit for a week so you can breakout all your survival "goodies!"

I haven't quite finished the bottle of scotch I bought to ring in Y2K with... champaigne is so passe. Other than that, being a computer industry insider, I had complete confidence that everything would be fine. Of course in the mid-90s my state (AZ) went to 25 year drivers licenses, with the expiration date porperly printed on them. When discussing the "issue" with people who were afraid I would dramatically toss down my drivers license on the table with the line "look if DMV can get it right just how hard can it be?", that usually stopped them in their tracks.

Got a case of kidney beans, a case of chili, some vegetables, and 50 pounds each of rolled oats and raw red winter wheat. Oh. And a couple of 5-gallon pails full of various dehydrated fruits and vegetables I had a blast making. (Not to mention a GALLON of shampoo I haven't even gotten around to dusting yet...)

Oops. Left off a grain mill and a meat grinder, plus an old fashioned "bottle" shaped sausage stuffer that belonged to my husband's mom.

It was a little over 500 rolls. I have less than a dozen left, and they are at my other house, or they'd be gone by now. Other than some ammo, which I'm glad I have, the one thing I have way too much of is canning jars. I probably have 20 cases of them, and no intention of ever using them. Everything else, I've consumed.

Hey nice of you to check in!
I figured someone would know who you were.
If you are in a rural area I'm sure there are some young moms who would appreciate the canning jars. You might try putting a note in a church bulletin or try a homeschooling group. There are still a lot of canners out there.
If you're inclined to homemade Christmas gifts there are cookie, muffin, or powdered hot drink recipes out there where you can prepare all the dry ingredients and give them away in a nice new canning jar with the recipe attached.
If you have a lot of friends and family it could only take a few years to get rid of them.

The only thing I have left from midnight Jan. 1 2000 are some empty beer bottles under the sink which were consumed while celebrating.

"People were stockpiling all kinds of stuff"

Stockpiled chips and beer, as I do for every Holiday :-)
