A professional society of wildlife biologists is investigating its members who submitted false samples of lynx hair during a national study to determine whether the actions violated ethical standards.

The Wildlife Society will examine the actions of three federal and state employees who submitted samples from captive and stuffed cats for laboratory DNA analysis. The lynx is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

I would say that you must work in private industry from your comments. You know like an evil private industry that won't allow biases to replace scientific methods.

Where have you been? I haven't seen anything from you for a few weeks.

If JR found out a "scientist" planted lynx hair on Southfork, that "scientist" would soon be pulled over by a friendly deputy who would find a stuffed lynx and some eagle feathers in his trunk. Also, an envelope full of cash, and a note saying "You get the rest of the money when you deliver the lynx."

I've been around, busy busy busy tho. Yeah, I work in evil private industry. Evil private industry that has to protect patent filings with notebook contents. You know, we only provide jobs and stuff, so I guess we're evil!

When I read how you posted that reply, I thought so. In the 70's/80's some of the pharmaceutical research labs got infiltrated by anti business hippies. They were a disaster research wise and for any patents for the companies they played their games with. About the mid 80's, the wise companies woke up and required exactly what you mentioned.

Those protocols prevent sloppy lab work, lab bias and protected the patent flows.

Yup. They're downright insistent on notebook protocols. Course, I'm sure the feds protocols are either nonexistent or just ignored.

When ethics in government no longer exists how can you trust gov't studies? Up here in Alaska the state and fed fish counters are saying the salmon run is going to be miserable this year so there will be restrictions on sport and subsistence fishing.

If the gov't can't be trusted how do we know when they are lying to us? They could just say "no more fishing, hunting, building, farming, etc, etc" and how would we know?

Prosecute the bastards...give them jailtime. A review by their peers is a step below a slap on the wrist.

BLOAT

Thanks for the ping.

The real question here is: will these people be sanctioned by their peers? Or will wrists be slapped, harsh words huffily spoken, and counciling given to the perpetrators?

I'm not sure it matters any longer. These unethical biologists have actually done regular US citizens a favor by giving us a legal precedent upon which to challenge federal wildlife studies for years to come. The GAO says the validity of ALL federal wildlife studies has come into question on the grounds of this and other unethical behavior, and questionable findings based upon no supportable evidence.

If they are NOT sanctioned by the Wildlife Society, the biologists methods will not suddenly become either "justified" or "valid". Instead, the public will call the motives and ethics of all the current members of the Wildlife Society into question.

If they really were testing the system, then there will be a diary of the actions

The next excuse will be they were too busy to keep their notebooks up to date.
These people are activists in scientists' clothing.
It is encouraging, however, that this story hasn't died.

If the peers are other agendized pseudo scientists, there will be public wrist slaps and private kudos.
However, if they ever want to get a real job, their credibility has been permanently damaged.

"The grossly unethical actions by certain members of their organization have substantially undermined the public's confidence, and I hope the Wildlife Society will show zero tolerance if it draws the same conclusion the General Accounting Office and the administration have drawn," Mr. McInnis said.

I hope so, too.

Jack Ward Thomas, Forest Service chief during the Clinton administration, said in a speech at the conference that the scandal caused by the actions of the biologists cannot be ignored.

It has been so far. Thomas is a supporter of the enviro-wacko movement and would have condoned the criminal acts of the biologists in question; not that there is much question.

"There is an elephant in the room. It is standing there in the back, swaying back and forth, flapping its ears and exuding foul odors from time to time. A blaze orange sign hangs along its sides with 'lynx scandal' in large black letters," Mr. Thomas said.

Most likely a 'pink elephant', if you know what I mean.

If the people who claim that they were carrying out science cannot provide this supporting material, then they are not scientists...they are thieves who are defrauding the taxpayers of this country.

Hiding, altering, destroying document that may be used in a judicial proceeding, whether civil or criminal, is also obstructing justice. If the documents are not produced, their absence must be construed to mean that the information contained in them is damaging to the government should any citizen or company sue the government for monetary damages. Government had a DUTY to be scrupulously honest with its citizens; something courts at every level have stated throughout the history of the United States.

I hope that society stands behind the scientists, just for my own amusement to hear their ridiculous reasons.
