I see. They don't want to break the trust of people breaking the law.

So, we wonder why people don't respect law officers, who pick and choose which laws on the books are supposed to be enforced...how convenient.

Austin Police Assistant Chief Rudy Landeros says, "Our officers will not, and let me stress this because it is very important, our officers will not stop, detain, or arrest anybody solely based on their immigration status. Period."
Landeros is openly declaring his malfeasance of duty, thus encouraging further lawlessness.
Fire him.

The people of Austin are not going to go to the city council meetings and express their outrage en masse so what do they expect?

Well....if these
"law enforcement officers" don't want to enforce the
LAW OF THE LAND, I suggest that
we taxpayers fire them and find someone willing to do the job. End of discussion.
Personally, I am getting sick and tired of the limp wristed, weak-kneed candy-a$$ed idiots that we have on the public payroll, telling US what they will and won't do. If they don't care enough to carry out their assigned duties, then get rid of them! NOW!!!!!!

Might be more to this than what we read. In a mediumish small town I know (will remain nameless) the local badges have also declined to bust Immigration Status. It's a matter of deep distrust of the feds.
It's an attitude of "we live here, we vote here, and no g.d. suit thousands of miles away is gonna' tell us how to police anymore than how to teach, how to farm, how to ranch!"
The attitude is totally devoid of any feelings either way for immigration, legal, pending or any other variance.
This attitude also prevails with federal direction for traffic signage. It's our way, or no way.
In this case the immigrants are getting a free ride because of the antipathy towards the feds.
And then there's always the fed mandates on forestry and grazing rights.................in the middle of a blizzard, if the feds came out with a study that approved cold-weather gear, I think some locals would strip naked just out of defiance.
Now there's an image: where would a naked sheriff tuck the Glock?

I heard this at my Republican club meeting last night. Our Congressman was there and said that Bill Clinton's Justice department put into place the ruling that local law enforcement could not interfere with the feds arresting illegals. Supposedly, local law enforcement could do it prior to Clinton's ruling. So, it's not just Austin police who won't arrest them.

Austin police say adding immigration duties would undo the trusting relationship local police have built with immigrantsWTF? Have they built trusting relationships with car thiefs too?

La Migra has its xenophobic goons everywhere, let them work for their fed tax confiscation pay..

Austin police say adding immigration duties would undo the trusting relationship local police have built with immigrants.LOL! Next time, maybe Ozzy should go urinate on Austin PDs wall instead of the Alamo!
To: chance33_98
Austin police say however, they will continue to cooperate with federal agents who have criminal warrants for illegal immigrants. Why the hell would they do that? Wouldn't that hurt their trusting relationship with the illegal aliens?
To: chance33_98
I want my local police help little old ladies cross the street not be arresting my gardener, my busboy and my airplane pilot. Just because some ill defined aim fits our nativist impulses it shouldn't blind us to the fundamentals of States and local rights vs the Federal Masters. Watching local authorities enforce the loony ADA legislation should have taught us a good lesson.

The cops have priorities on crimes. Let the INS beef up and handle immigration issues. If police in Austin start rousting all the illegal immigrants, guess how much help they are going to get for info on murders, rapes, etc... from illegal eyewitnesses.
If illegals know that the INS are out to get them, but the cops won't roust them, it makes the cops' job that much easier.

Citizens arrest? Certainly the sissie cops won't do it. That would require a direct action. They like to shoot people once fully armored and armed with machine guns, late at night or early in the morning!

Austin Police Assistant Chief Rudy Landeros says, "Our officers will not, and let me stress this because it is very important, our officers will not stop, detain, or arrest anybody solely based on their immigration status. Period." Looks like the belligerence in government is moving down to the local level. This guy is in serious need of firing.

These cops are fed up with the fact that the Feds are incapable of performing their job, and because of that, they are now trying to dump the enforcement of Federal Laws on local cops.
The INS needs to do their friggin' job, or maybe we should sh%tcan the entire agency and start all over.

Living in Austin, I'm glad. I don't think the federal government should be interfering in the affairs of the local PDs. The Brady Law was bad enough (didn't some Sheriff fight it out in Arizona?).
The government has INS and Border Patrol, they don't need to try and suck in the local PDs. I don't need the size of the local PD growing because the government can't guard the border. I don't need my tax dollars to go for more militarization of the local PDs.
I was surprised, to be honest. Austin PD has been becoming more and more militarized as it is.
