Austin Police Won't Arrest People Only For Immigration Status
The U.S. Justice Department, which controls the Immigration and Naturalization Service, says it can't handle the 7 million immigrants currently in the U.S. Therefore, it is considering a proposal to allow local police to do their job for them. Nearly 8 months ago, 19 hijackers slipped through Americas immigration security net committing the most devastating terrorist attacks on American soil. Now, controlling immigration in America has become drastically more important. Austin police say adding immigration duties would undo the trusting relationship local police have built with immigrants. Police say illegal immigrants often do not report crime, for fear they will be deported. Austin Police Assistant Chief Rudy Landeros says, "Our officers will not, and let me stress this because it is very important, our officers will not stop, detain, or arrest anybody solely based on their immigration status. Period." Austin police say however, they will continue to cooperate with federal agents who have criminal warrants for illegal immigrants.
Looks like the belligerence in government is moving down to the local level. This guy is in serious need of firing.
He must be trying to land a job with the GOP bigwigs.
What do you want to bet ol' Rudy is a member of the National Latino Peace Officers Association? Seems that this outfit isn't too hot on enforcing any laws that might go against the interests of la raza (see: U.S. may let state, local authorities enforce federal immigration laws). Balkanization? Hmmmm. Wasn't it Teddy Roosevelt who said, "There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities." ???? Rudy needs to become an instant day laborer pest.... along with the 9,999 other jerks he supposedly represents.
The INS needs to do their friggin' job, or maybe we should sh%tcan the entire agency and start all over.
Three other fairly large cities in Texas have signed on to not checking immigration status: Fort Worth, Arlington, and Plano(north of Dallas). I suspect most city police departments in Texas are not going to become adjuncts to the INS.
I can't help but think, and I am confident, that if President Bush wanted to deport these millions of illegal, and stop this immigration "free for all" there would be a whole lot of hard core Bush supporters on this and other threads backing him 100 percent.
You hit the nail right on the head. The inmates are running the asylum.
You must be mistaken Nancy, all the illegals in our country are just hard working lawn and garden folks taking care of their families.
Malfeasance schmalfeasance. Illegal immigration is not a violation of city law. I actually applaud the city police not allowing themselves to be made an arm of the Federal government. Now if the FBI wants to come in and arrest the illegal immigrants, more power to them. Maybe they'd spend less time shooting innocent citizens if they did.
LOL! Sad, yet funny.
The government has INS and Border Patrol, they don't need to try and suck in the local PDs. I don't need the size of the local PD growing because the government can't guard the border. I don't need my tax dollars to go for more militarization of the local PDs.
I was surprised, to be honest. Austin PD has been becoming more and more militarized as it is.
I don't know how long Arizona has had that law, but going by the Illinois model, I'm guessing that they will soon be able to pull you over just FOR the seatbelt.
Once they got it passed, it was only a matter of a few years before they upgraded it, and nobody made a peep about it.
