Austin Police Won't Arrest People Only For Immigration Status


The U.S. Justice Department, which controls the Immigration and Naturalization Service, says it can't handle the 7 million immigrants currently in the U.S. Therefore, it is considering a proposal to allow local police to do their job for them. Nearly 8 months ago, 19 hijackers slipped through America’s immigration security net committing the most devastating terrorist attacks on American soil. Now, controlling immigration in America has become drastically more important. Austin police say adding immigration duties would undo the trusting relationship local police have built with immigrants. Police say illegal immigrants often do not report crime, for fear they will be deported. Austin Police Assistant Chief Rudy Landeros says, "Our officers will not, and let me stress this because it is very important, our officers will not stop, detain, or arrest anybody solely based on their immigration status. Period." Austin police say however, they will continue to cooperate with federal agents who have criminal warrants for illegal immigrants.

Landeros is openly declaring his malfeasance of duty, thus encouraging further lawlessness.

Well....if these "law enforcement officers" don't want to enforce the LAW OF THE LAND, I suggest that we taxpayers fire them and find someone willing to do the job. End of discussion.

Personally, I am getting sick and tired of the limp wristed, weak-kneed candy-a$$ed idiots that we have on the public payroll, telling US what they will and won't do. If they don't care enough to carry out their assigned duties, then get rid of them! NOW!!!!!!

Might be more to this than what we read. In a mediumish small town I know (will remain nameless) the local badges have also declined to bust Immigration Status. It's a matter of deep distrust of the feds.
It's an attitude of "we live here, we vote here, and no g.d. suit thousands of miles away is gonna' tell us how to police anymore than how to teach, how to farm, how to ranch!"
The attitude is totally devoid of any feelings either way for immigration, legal, pending or any other variance.
This attitude also prevails with federal direction for traffic signage. It's our way, or no way.
In this case the immigrants are getting a free ride because of the antipathy towards the feds.
And then there's always the fed mandates on forestry and grazing rights.................in the middle of a blizzard, if the feds came out with a study that approved cold-weather gear, I think some locals would strip naked just out of defiance.

If I were the Justice Department I would order the Police Chief to do his job, and when he didn't slap him with a writ of mandamus and haul his ass into court where he could be fined or jailed.

You prefer big government over home rule, fine.
Just be careful where you live and work with that attitude. If a town hires a cop to protect the citizens against violent crime and leave non-violent crime to the lawyers and courts, you'll be a very unpopular person with your attitude in that town.
Homerule has adherents. Some will remember that's how we got ride of King George.
You wouldn't do well in a town that still idolizes Barry Goldwater.

My take on Austin Police's refusal to arrest on immigration violations is much the same as yours. Where do these twits get off thinking that they can pick and choose which laws they are going to enforce? You'd think that they would want to maintain the best relationship with those that pay their salary. Perhaps that's it; the cops are getting a bigger contribution from the illegals. Just speculating.

I heard this at my Republican club meeting last night. Our Congressman was there and said that Bill Clinton's Justice department put into place the ruling that local law enforcement could not interfere with the feds arresting illegals. Supposedly, local law enforcement could do it prior to Clinton's ruling. So, it's not just Austin police who won't arrest them.

The base point is though, you have cops telling you it is their job to enforce laws, and the rest is up to the judge. Yet they themselves may decide not to obey the law. It does not matter the excuse, I may disagree with some laws strongly, but I will obey them. You the change the system through the system.
