A recent thread conversation with RightWing2 got me to thinking; how does the US Army compare with the rest of the worlds military forces? So I looked it up, and here you go:
The Chinese have 2 Million active, with about 7000 tanks.
The Indian army has about 980,000 active, with 3500 tanks.
The North Koreans supposedly have 950,000 in uniform, with 3100 tanks.
The South Koreans, not to be outdone, have 560,000 in uniform, with 2100 tanks.
Pakistan has 520,000 active, with 2220 tanks.
The US has 480,000 active, with 7500 tanks.
The Russian Federation has 350,000 active, with 6300 tanks.
Finally, our friends the French, have 140,000 active, with just 600 tanks.
The tank numbers give you some idea of the degree of mechanization, lots of ChiCom soldiers walk to work.

What happened to all the French tanks? Did they surrender them all?
To: xsrdx
The only tanks that are not just a convenient box to contain the charred remains of the tankers are driven by us, some NATO allies, Israel, and the better-equipped parts of the Russian army. Even ground mechanization is obsolete except in Korea and Israel (assuming Europe is not in play) - maybe Taiwan, too.

Stats are always fun to look at. But counting beans is certainly not the best measure of performance.

I would be interested in numbers for armored personel carriers, armored fighting vehicles, self propeled howitzers, and other miscelaneous armored vehicles.
I think if you add these to your stats, the US will be far, far, far ahead of everyone else in the world with the possible exception of russia.

The big question is...who can project power?....Answer....only the USA. Everbody else is just for parades. We can kick butt in the capital of any country in the world.

Measuring military power by numbers of men and tanks is like measuring WWII by the number of horses ans swords.
The Russians went into Afghanistan with over a 500,000 men and lots of tanks, choppers and planes. Ten years later they left defeated.
We went into Afghanistan with 7,000 men and a fraction of the tanks choppers and planes used by the Russians. Six months later we are only left with little more than mopping up to do.
The media and lots of people on this site think the military world resembls Desert storm or Nam. It does not.
It is a whole new ball game just like WWII was a whole new ball game. A million highly trained French troops were no match for half that number of German troops equiped with better weapons.
Victory can always be assured by superior tactics, weapons, and the will to use them. We have all three.
It ain't the size of the Dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the Dog.

Ever see the 1999 movie, Deterrence, with Kevin Pollak as President Walter Emerson? It has a happy ending -- he blows up Baghdad with a 100 megaton H bomb. :-)

My off-hand guess is that the United States could probably count on drawing out a fully armed militia of around 10,000,000 should it become necessary thanks to our 2nd Amendment. That would be drawn completely from private resources.

I would say more than 10M.

Never saw it. But I think Common Tator is right....you can have a million tanks and guns, but if your heart isn't in the fight, you've already lost.

I'm just guessing based on the estimated 80,000,000 guns owned by private individuals, then guessing at how many would be fit to serve and have access to the additional resources. But heck, if it came down to it, they'd probably all show up to the party!

I have a hard time understanding how their shoes would hold up for more than a parade rest or two. Really flimsy affairs. Of course, with all the Nike et al factories there now, perhaps they are better shod.

Hey there bucko, you shouldn't point a firearm at something unless you intend to shoot...that includes your fellow Freepers.
