WASHINGTON -- Sen. Patrick Leahy says a controversial proposal to embed copy protection in electronics gear will not become law this year.
Since Leahy is the powerful chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee, his opposition instantly boosts the difficulty Hollywood studios will encounter in their attempts to enact sweeping copyright legislation.

While the Dems say that they are in favor of privacy in the bedroom, apparently they don't extend that to the computer you may have in your bedroom.

Reynolds wrote in a column this week: "If the Republicans have any sense, they'll be making an issue of this in the next elections, painting the Democrats as hypocrites who have sold out to Hollywood, and who are trying to reach, Big Brother-like, into the hearts of American televisions and computers. But even if they don't, a lot of Web denizens will be saying it, and it's likely to have a lot of resonance. Because it's true." Sounds like a good idea to me.

Hollings is SO damn liberal, he's further left than one of the biggest New England Democrats. So much for the theory that all those "old time" southern Democrats are "more conservative than "half the Republicans". This guy isn't even as conservative as a New England 'RAT!

I read a post on Slashdot the other day praising Leahy for being a staunch supporter of the First Amendment. He was a co-sponsor of the CFR bill that will stifle free speech. Ignorance prevails, as usual.

Once upon a time (back in the 70's), Hollings was a reasonably decent senator who represented South Carolina instead of Hollywood. Not anymore.
The makers of recording technology employ a lot more normal people (those with families or spouses to support) than Hollywood.
The V-Chip is like the damned gun control laws-- assumes everyone is guilty and needs preventative detention.
