WANNABE SOLDIERS

THIS is a story about Wannabes - you know, people who "want to be" something special and unique. There are SEAL wannabes and Green Beret wannabes. The Palestinians are soldier wannabes.

They have several pictures of dead Palestinian terrorists, at least one of which is a "before and after."

I beleive you are correct about the pictures being staged, where's the brass?

Don't know about the brass but the photos don't look staged to me. A well trained sniper hit the guy who went down. Probably a chest shot with a .223, likely hit the heart or a major artery.

The intent was to reduce fire and control the scene. The sniper only had to hit one man. The others suddenly lost interest in the fight AND were occupied with removing their comrad from the street. Mission accomplished, IMHO.

Anybody who's ever gone through Basic Training would know that standing in the middle of the street during a firefight is not exactly the best way to stay alive

Yeah, but he was doing what Hollywood movies show.

There is a difference between taking pride in your work and actually "enjoying it". We did have some cats that went over the edge and did begin enjoying "combat". And we needed to get them out quickly, as they more than not took unnecessary risks, which in turn put the rest of us doing our "professional" best at risk.

The less "emotion" of any type one had the better off we were. But to fight in combat without emotion is damned near impossible.

The really spooky guys were the ones that when you looked into their eyes you only saw a bottomless pit. Unfortunately some of them came home and for years, sometimes forever, never again found their souls.

No you are correct, combat is not something to find enjoyment from and damn few pros do, and yet the real pro's are ready, by virture of their training, to answer the call, whenever it comes.

May God Bless those who answer the clarion call without hesitation ... America's Finest!

If I didn't have this "out of shape", 56 year old body, I would go in a minute. But it would not be out of a sense of wanting the "thrill of battle". It would be to serve our nation, once again, in what I believe is the most dire threat to our way of life faced in my life time.

That's why the Israeli's consistently beat back every Arab attack...from 1948 until the present. Some 3.5 million Israelis and 100 million Arabs -- talk about David and Goliath!

However, one must remember that barbarians brought down the Roman empire and that Ghengis Kahn conquered half of Europe, Russia and most of Asia above India, that the Russian Red Army beat the Germans at Stalingrad and Leningrad, and that Napoleon was defeated in Russia, while the Biritsh and the Russians were beaten by the Afghans. Last but not least, let's not forget Vietnam.

It is one thing to recognize your enemy's weakness and there is an altogether different thing to minimize his potential. The Arabs have potential. One out of every five Israeli citizens. They are Israeli-born citizens of Israel and their numbers are growing much faster than the Israeli numbers are. Look at Kosovo: in 1968, 67% of the poulation was ehtnic Albanian; twenty years later it was close to 90%. Why? The Albaninas have the highest natality rate in Europe.

Superior technology and civilization can control the situation for a while, but winning in this case would take a lot more. We left Somalia because it wasn't worth losing out soliders in that place for a dubious cause. Sure, many more Vietnamese died than Americans, and sure many more Mogadishans died, but for a civilized world where life is valued a lot more, each and every death is a terrible blow. It took just one "barbarian" as you call them to kill 250 Marines in Beirut. It took a dozen terrorist to kill nearly 3,000 people in the pentagon anf WTC attacks.

There is no place for jingoism here, and certainly never ever underestimate your enemy no matter how stupid, inept or untrained he may appear.

The following post came from a retired Lt. Col in the IDF who I have been chatting with for some time.

There are many people who post messages on this board full of anti Semitic venom and Jew hatred. Their reasoning is as flawed as their bigotry and their pathetic attempts to re create history in their skewed interpretations is laughable and demonstrative of their ignorance and jealousy. Bigots are pathetic losers, who seek to create artificial enemies for their own failures and shortcomings.

Genuine political disagreements can arise without prejudice, but those who hate Israel and Jews, are incapable of realpolitik and devoid of even a modicum of open mindedness. If they seek to hurt Israel through their inflamatory vomitous, let me tell you that they are wasting their time. I, and my fellow Israelis, will continue to defend our land and our people in any way we see fit and necessary. It is strangely disconcerting to see us accused of barbarity when we answer the deliberate targetting of our civilians with the demolition of empty houses and abandoned buildings. We evacuated the PA radio station before we destroyed it. Our F 16s bomb police stations in the night, when they are unoccupied and the Apaches target criminals, many of whom are on US provided lists to the PA, whom they refuse to imprison.

Our restraint is evident. Does anyone believe for a second that if we exercised the power at our disposal that a building would be left standing east of Jerusalem? Ramallah, Nablus, Kalkilya, Tul Karem, Jenin, Jericho, and Abu Sneineh would be parking lots by now. We do not target civilians deliberately, but if the terrorist savages choose to use their children as cannon fodder and their unarmed women as barricades from which to hide behind, their deaths are on their own heads. The Arabs have always displayed abject cowardice and a disregard for the lives of their own people-why else did the jordanians and thr Egyptians keep the refugees penned up behind barbed wire for 19 years?

When a rioter throws a stone at a soldier, that soldier will shoot to kill-rocks thrown through the air could just as easily be grenades. Savages fire automatic weapons at my men from behind their children, and a soldier will respond to enemy fire to save his life, the lives of his comrades, and to force an end to the aggression. An American soldier was shot and killed by a 14 year old youth in Afghanistan, US troops have told me about the Vietcong teens who killed their buddies-anyone who opens fire on my soldiers will be answered with fire. Use automatic weapons from static locations, and I will send tank shells through the doors and windows. Employ groves of trees and civilain homes as firebases, and I will burn the grove and bulldoze the house. I need not make any excuses in the defense of my country-neither would any other legitimate soldier of any nation.

Terrorists are beneath contempt-they target civilians deliberately, they hide behind their own families, they assault the decency of mankind and they deserve no quarter and no mercy. They have killed thoudsands of peace loving people who never did anything but live their lives, and the threat of Islamic fundamental extremism endangers not only Israel, but the western world. India, the Phillippines, America, and even Egypt and Jordan, are all targets of these international thugs.

I have been a soldier most of my life, fought on many battlefields, and i have killed men with ny bare hands, all in defense of my country. No one wants peace more than a combat soldier who has seen the filth and terror of war, but peace at any price is not peace, it is surrender. Jews no longer see suicide and death as viable options. After Auschwitz, there is nothing you bigots and lowlifes can scare us with.

So, Israel is a reality, whether you like it or not - the Jewish people will survive and prosper in their ancient homeland whether you like it or not - Israelis will continue to live our lives without succumbing to your attacks, and the Jewish people will survive as we always have, with pride, with honor, and with courage.

Continue your fecal diatribes against us, because they display your mental disabilities. I'm sure that one of your ilk will answer this letter with another of your inanities, and I will sit here and laugh. In the words of my people, AM ISRAEL CHAI-THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL LIVE! "

I think it is worth noticing that so far (Sunday, noon EST) the other Arab countries - the ones that swore and threatened a hair trigger response if the Israelis took a tough stance against the PLO - have somehow all gotten cold feet and are doing nothing but running their mouths.

As an Israeli soldier my first instinct would be to return fire and kill the enemy, if i saw 4-5 men armed and shooting i would subdue that enemy i would not leave the other three alive to help, i believe this picture to be a faked photo op nothing more, also the photographer himself is in a very precarious position to the front left !! if i was a photographer i would not be standing here.

The LAPD, especially under Darryl Gates, were also a bunch of Wannabe Soldiers. They forgot that they are supposed to be Peace Officers.

We aren't talking about instincts. I said what I see in the pictures is a military sniper at work, doing what he's trained to do. I see the results of an applied sniper tactic, not instinct.

Selective fire - killing of one opponent - is efficient as a tactic in disabling the group seen in the pictures.

The photographer may have been in a protected location, relative to the sniper. Indeed, he could have been some distance away from the group he photographed - using a telephoto lens.

I was addicted to Adrenilian (sp)I thrived on the high of excietment and living close to death. For a 20 yr.old warrior it was the experience of a lifetime...unfortunetly also is the fact that from that moment on we will never do anything as meaningful for the rest of our lives. Its not about wanting to start killing again...its about wanting to feel "really" alive again.

I understand exactly what you are saying and agree with you. However, from a practical perspective I wouldn't put others at risk by actually being dropped in a hot zone again. Those 20 year old warriors would be taking care of a crippled up old man, instead of focusing on their own assignments.

Definitly staged, which brings us to the real issue -- Professional journalists paying grown children to flirt with death in front of a camera lens. I think it's reasonable to assume they're paid. Why else would it happen before a group of photographers? ...

Center of mass, agreed. The shot where they turn to run, (IMO) shows the instant of bullet impact, and the entry hole is visible just behind the left armpit, in another photo. Bleeding was internal, the visible blood ran through the clothing, or out the dead man's face. A head or neck hit would have produced LOTS more blood, as the heart continued to pump.

These photographers ARE suicidal -- they're banking on the seemingly surgical nature of the rifle fire.
