No, this is awful!
I don't know where anything is anymore!
Where are the sidebars?
I used to go straight to them
to find out
what was going on.

Monitor size not a problem here! I use an IBM P201 21" trinitron (made for IBM by Sony Japan). As a test for most people on the scrolling issue, grab the scroll bar on this thread, and as you move the mouse rapidly, watch how closely the scroll bar follows the mouse cursor. Now try the same thing on the "latest posts". Big difference, since the scroll bar will not keep up with the drag of the mouse cursor. All due to the Flag graphic.
Same thing happens when I use my Microsoft Intellimouse Pro with the Intellipoint software. Using the wheel button in the autoscroll mode is vastly slower with the Flag graphic on the screen instead of just thread text. Bad user design, given equipment most use here.

Agree! There is an old saying 'If it ain't broke don't fix it'.
The old FR was not broken. Get used to it. You will never see the old, effective FR back. This stinks!!

Not to mention that it took me fifteen f*%#*$# minutes just to figure out how to log in Do you need any assistance finding your wife and kids? Car keys? The dog?

the old fr was more W3 compiliant than this layout. Also I feel sorry for people not using the lastest hardware and software.
I can just imagine the issues of load times on low bandwidth users and smaller monitors.

find "topics" at the top; scroll down to the topic you want (breaking news and lots others); click; it will say you're not subscribed; look over on the left bar--in small print it has a link to subscribe; hit it, and badda-bing.

If you disable Java and Java Script when using Netscape, the Flag does not appear on the left side. That definitely helps me to minimize the "sea sickness" effect when scrolling.

John, I now feel embarassed and uncomfortable ... it dawned on me - FR is sophisticated and of course there are niche forums that I must have stumbled innocently into.
I'm in a forum for head injury victims, right?

Thanks for the reach around.

Kidding around ... but not with this truth: You are top 5% friend, and I admire that.

Is there any way to remove the "question" so I can move breaking news to the top of the page?
Is there any way to get more then 4 or 5 listings in the breaking news before the "more" prompt? I want my breaking and frontpage news lists as long as they used to be...is that just a setting?
Over all I REALLY REALLY HATE IT. But I am attempting to learn to live with it.

I kind of like it. It make a nice impression when you see it. Beside, the times, they are a changin' and if Freepers want to continue to expand and forward a positive front and have an impact on our future, lots of things are going to change as FR grows.
I like the region-specific header section at the top above the post, kind of a local activist alert.
I'm sure if you forward specific concerns to JR he'll consider them along with the others. This current site was designed along the same lines and I do think it looks great.

I'd like to get Milwaukee Bucks boxscores ... could you add that to your wish list?
Guess there won't be a mad scramble to see who gets to post #13,000,000, etc.

I really like it. It is sharp and clear. Nice work. Thanks

Thanks for the info about Netscape. I use IE 5.01(SP2) and will try turning off the MS Java VM. This impacts other sites where I wish to keep the VM active, but this "improvement" to the visual output of FR didn't hit the mark this time.
