There made in foreign countries but by American companies industry only becomes a national security issue when weapons, food, and vital raw materials are made out of the country( like oil, maganese, chromium) and neighbors don't count since we can easily secure Canada and Mexico's production if we have to. I happen to know that NIKEs Air tennis shoes cost $200 a pair now and is made with slave labor.

And only a fraction of the cost of production stays in the county of manufacture. The other $190 in mark up goes to the U.S. distributor and retailer. If the shoes were made here, and $200 is the price the market will bear, then the distributors and retailers will be losing a lot of money. Overall, it will be a lose-lose situation for America.

Of course,this raises the question of,"Where are we going to come up with the money to support all these illegal alien families who will be put out of work due to the business partners of Prescott Bush undercutting them by using slave labor?"

I live near a city that lost 12,000 textile jobs to NAFTA and this was one of the last garment industry areas left in the US. It's been foreign labor in textiles for quite some time, the jobs moved to Mexico but the illegals stayed collecting benefits ---good benefits after amnesty rewarded them. If it was really free market, these people should have gone back home after their jobs went to Mexico.

I just lost my job in the textile industry in nc. there were two mexicans working in our distribution facility. her husband lost his job in the office as well. they were not illegals. eastern nc sucks because of the textile industry. has anybody been to kinston before? it looks like beirut downtown. all the industry we have here now is just a stop over from indiana, ohio, and the northeast until they can move the operations further south. mexico, el salvador guatamala. the high paying jobs at these companies are made up of transfers that come from the north.

I don't mean to sound too callous, but there was a time when Mass and New Hampshire were filled with textile mills (which, since I mentioned immigration, largely employed French Canadian labor). It just isn't viable to run a textile mill in this country anymore, even if you put a 100% protective tariff on the industry.

No offense,but you and most other people are not even looking at what is important. You are tilting at non-existant windmills. There is no such critter as a "American Corporation" anymore. They are all "International Corporations",and we are heading rapidly towards a international "Corporate Government". Bubba-2 is a cheerleader for this,as was his useless father,and Bubba-1. Nafta is irrelevant because within the next 20 years neither the USA OR Mexico will even exist. Together with Canada,we will be the "North American Union".

Propping up another industry. What's Bush's connection to the textile industry? He's invested somewhere. I'm not sure we need any "federal" help - I think they've done enough damage.
