Iraq said on Sunday that it is ready to recieve a U.S. delegation to dicuss the fate of an American pilot shot down over iraq in the 1991 Guf War

'Iraq is ready to recieve any American team, accompanied by U.S. media, in order to discuss and document this issue under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross,' a Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement.

In Washington Vice President Dick Cheney said on CBS 'Face the Nation' that he was unware of the Iraqi offer, and would want to 'see whether or not this is a serious proposition or whether Saddam Hussein is trying to change the subject.'

Lt. Commander Michael Scott Speicher was lost when his Navy F/A-18 Hornet jet was shot down on January 17, 1991, the first night of the war.

The author knows quite a bit more then myself about the particulars of this situation.

I think I'm missing something, but when did Iraq admit to having him? They agreed to "talk" about his fate, but from what I can tell, have not yet admitted anything. Also, is the title of this thread misleading, or was he again reclassified? The last I heard, he was MIA. Did they change this? I certainly hope so!

I've read the NR article by CDR Stumpf.

I've also read the contemporary reporting from 1991. The problem is that CDR Stumpf's article repeats, without any critical thinking, the same suspect information that the POW hucksters apparently manufactured (particularly the idea that satellite imaging identified Speicher's ejection seat--there are technical issues on that claim that cause me to raise the BS flag). Also, the article doesn't explain adequately how he would have survived a head-on missile impact that he didn't attempt to evade.

As for the petition: it's a feel-good move, not something that will actually get LCDR Speicher home (assuming he's alive, which I highly doubt, based on the eyewitness reports from January 17/18, 1991).

While that may be true, when they FINALLY located the wreckage of his plane, the canopy was a mile away and appeared to have functioned properly in an ejection. The initial reports also claimed that the plane was "blown to bits" in midair, but was found to be largely intact in the ground at the crash site. It's worth a look...and worth the attention of our government. HE is worth it, dead or alive. (Which reminds me, if they had his remains...why did they even TRY sending remains from Iraq that were later tested and proven to NOT be his?)

There you go, repeating the stuff Scott Barnes (noted POW/MIA huckster and fake Vietnam vet) has been saying since 1995.

That's the problem: the accounts of how they supposedly found the intact wreckage sound good unless you understand how satellite recon actually works.

Exactly. Those are the only hard-and-fast FACTS that we have, barring the USG disclosing overhead imagery of the crash site. Everything that arose AFTER January 17/18, 1991, is rumor or hearsay that is traceable to a known fraud.
