Iraq said on Sunday that it is ready to recieve a U.S. delegation to dicuss the fate of an American pilot shot down over iraq in the 1991 Guf War

'Iraq is ready to recieve any American team, accompanied by U.S. media, in order to discuss and document this issue under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross,' a Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement.

In Washington Vice President Dick Cheney said on CBS 'Face the Nation' that he was unware of the Iraqi offer, and would want to 'see whether or not this is a serious proposition or whether Saddam Hussein is trying to change the subject.'

Lt. Commander Michael Scott Speicher was lost when his Navy F/A-18 Hornet jet was shot down on January 17, 1991, the first night of the war.

It's not unusual in situations like this. It is seen as letting a third party mediate or more accurately, set the ground rules.

Actually, I see this as rather progressive for Hussein.

As this whole situation unfolds, I'm afraid it's going to take on some of the aspects of the old Cary Grant flick, "My Favorit Wife."

Why under the supervision of the International Red Cross?

Because they've been wrong about everything else?

by the way, where is the outrage from the international community and the red cross? this guy has been held for over 11 years, where are the folks who feel so bad about the scumballs at gitmo? want to bet the guys in gitmo are living better than this poor man has for 11 plus years? iraq only admits holding this guy after 11 years and we called him on it, we let the world watch us transport the al qaeda to gitmo on television. if we hadnt said anything, hussein wouldnt have come out and said, "oh yeah, we have your man. come talk about him"... im so sick of the apologists for the scumballs, and the hate america first, at all costs, crowd!

"How many OTHER American POWs are there that we (the govt) know of?"

We (the people) probably don't want to know.

Have I been in a coma? I can't remember ever hearing word one about this captive pilot.

At the time LCDR Speicher was shot down, the evidence indicated that his aircraft had taken a frontal aspect direct hit with a very powerful missile warhead. All present, including the guy's squadron CO, had determined that he didn't make it out of the aircraft.

It wasn't until the POW/MIA hucksters realized that the Vietnam POW/MIA issue had officially cratered that this guy suddenly became a "potential MIA." Scott Barnes (author of BOHICA and fake Vietnam vet outed by B. G. Burkett in Stolen Valor) was one of the first to grab onto this case--IIRC, the ONLY Gulf War case where we didn't have a body in hand (the area where Speicher's aircraft went in was extremely remote).

He didn't turn into an MIA until Bubba Clinton decided to stick it to Dubya three days before his inauguration.

I can't believe we didn't insist on his return before our tanks left the desert.

Think this thing through: the evidence at hand in 1991 indicated that he hadn't gotten out (no evasion prior to missile impact, no rescue beacon afterwards). We had no idea he wasn't KIA.

The "new evidence" sounds good, until you start looking for details--and then it's obvious that it's BS made up by people who don't know how technology really works.
