It's the difference between hating sin and loving a sinner. You can hate the Islam faith, but have compassion and love towards Muslims. You can hate the Catholic hierchy but love the church members. You can hate alcoholism but love alcoholics.

God hates sin, yet scripture records that He loved us while we were yet sinners. We are not defined by entirely by our sin. We are and remain God's creation, and descendant's of Adam and Noah.

Muslims are not defined by entirely by their faith. They are humans. They are and will remain regardless of their faith, God's creation. They remain Abraham's decendants regardless of what their faith is. They remain physical brothers to the Jews, no matter how much they hate the Jews and want them dead.

Do you see how they are different from their faith and why it's not a contradiction for him to say that?
