Wed Feb 27,10:42 AM ET

BOSTON (Reuters) - Federal authorities Wednesday began rounding up as many as 20 workers at Logan International airport, where the two planes that crashed into the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11 took off, a spokeswoman said.

"We are seeking the arrest of 20 employees of various companies that work at Logan," Boston's main commercial airport, said Samantha Martin, a spokeswoman at the office of U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan.

Martin declined comment on why law enforcement was arresting the workers. She also declined comment on a local radio report that said the suspects would be charged with having false Social Security (news - web sites) numbers that gave them access to the airport.

She said the arrests started very early Wednesday and that so far some 15 people had been taken into custody. A news conference was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EST.

On Sept. 11, two jumbo jets were hijacked after leaving Logan and flown into the twin towers in New York. The hijack attacks, along with another that hit the Pentagon (news - web sites) and a fourth that crashed in Pennsylvania, killed more than 3,000 people.

Well, since we haven't had any bombs or food poisoning in that area, I must conclude they were very closely watched.

I am hoping they had calls monitored, bank records traced, etc.

We shall see.

What? You aren't impressed at the lightning-like strike by authorities a mere 5 1/2 months later?

Wonder how many just quietly sneaked off in that time.

Maybe, but if so, let's hope that they were being watched VERY closely

Beliving as I do (not too optimistic I hope) that our justive department is not overly dumb, everytime I see people released I opine that they are being tracked and observed to find more of the scum. I just hope it is so. This article seems to confirm.

When Dukakis was governor, his administration generated fraudulent social security numbers to illegal aliens so they could stay in the US.

It was actually worse than that. The intent was, first and foremost, to assist/permit the illegals to immediately get on welfare -- to let them travel directly from the airport to the welfare office. Unbelieveable!

On a similar note, how about Daschle's new name -- "the Dukakis of the Dakota's"!

I also wondered about this for a long time. A few stories have mentioned in passing that the September 11th hijackers did not carry the knives and boxcutters onto the planes themselves. If this is true, that can only leave the airport workers.

I would expect some murder indictments to come out of this.

Relax...remember what President W said...there will be things going on that we wont ever know about or find about until way later on.The news about what is and has been accomplished will be coming out at key times methinks. I see some serious news coming out around election time in November and whoever Bush endorses they will be a lock. Why screw with a working formula and why not stick with the man who is getting things done and the people he chose?

I still say nothing will happen with Iraq until 2003. Bush will then be knee deep in a war and nobody is going to be in the mood to vote in a new president mid war..Bush is a lock in 2004. Relax....things are getting taken care of...slowly but surely. That is why he put no clock on this war.

After Kabul, the US should do some "nation building" in Cambridge, MA.

Why stop there? There's more on the other side of the river.

It's great and all that they are arresting these folks, but where are the high level resignations for the gross intelligence failure that allowed for 9/11 to happen? I am talking about those billion dollar departments who we pay "to think the unthinkable and plan for the unimaginable."

Whether it was the massive short selling of airline and insurance stock just prior to 9/11 that apparently went unnoticed, or the comings and goings, suspicious contacts and training among many known associates of Muslim terrorist groups that were never investigated, there was a massive failure.

With all the technology and safeguards in place, who was manning the ship?

Americans; Americans sleeping at the wheel.

I wonder why it has taken so long to round up these people.

Aha! I can hear it now. "If they had a phony National ID card, they could have been rounded up before 9/11." Just like the phony SSN, I-9, and all other false documentation that did no good.

An ounce of enforcment is better than a pounding on the door in the middle of the night.

They have a do-nothing State Tropper barracks assigned to Logan Airport (and located right there at Logan). Prior to 9/11, their primary function in life appeared to be blowing their whistles at drivers attempting to drop off passengers in front of the terminal. Then they would hang out at the Dunkin' Donuts just inside the terminal. They wear weird 1930's uniforms here. High boots and horse-riding bloomer pants (forget what they call them). I don't think I've ever seen a trooper actually in the gate area walking around on foot patrol. They do now, of course.

It has been reported that the former Iraqi soldier, Hussain Al-Hussaini, that was tied to the OKC bombing by the good investigative work of Jayna Davis was working on the ramp at Logan on September 11. Above is a link to information from the court record on Al-Hussaini.
