Coptic Church Attacked In Southern Egypt

February 12, 2002

Crosswalk.com News Channel - Compass Direct reports that Coptic Orthodox Christians celebrating their first Sunday Mass Feb. 10 were attacked with rocks and firebombs by a Muslim mob near El-Minya, 140 miles south of Cairo.

According to local sources in the village of Bani El-Walmous, the armed attackers damaged the church's cross and set the pews on fire. Reuters reported that the 11 people were injured, including two policemen.

But according to the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera TV station's Arabic news broadcasts, 10 Coptic Christians were wounded and 35 nearby homes were destroyed. The BBC reported only four injuries, three Muslims and a Christian, with five homes set afire. Later reports could confirm only 15 Coptic homes burned, with a number of others looted. "We are still waiting for the details," editor Youssef Sidhom of the weekly "Watani" newspaper told Compass, after confirming he had a correspondent at the site.

Egyptian authorities blamed the conflict on "provocative elements from both sides, Muslim and Christian" in official statements. Security forces told Reuters that after a Muslim mob pelted the church with rocks, Coptic Christians inside the building had fired shotguns at their attackers.

If you would like to learn how it would be for a Christian to live in a Muslim society just study the activity of the Coptic Church in Egypt. You will soon learn, if you haven't already, that there is no more intolerant religion than Islam.

Sometimes, you just have to speak their language louder for them to hear the message.

Just keep repeating to yourself that Islam is a peaceful religion. You do that enough, and you might begin to believe it.

"It's often said that Islam is tolerant. But I know of no Islamic country that is tolerant. Islam only preaches tolerance in countries where it is in a minority." - German Cardinal Joachim Meisner to Bunte magazine, via CWNews.com, Berlin, November 14, 2001.

Islam, the peace that surpasses all understanding.

Kill everyone who won't convert until there's no one else left, that's the peace of Islam.

Washington DC (02/11/2002)-- The consecration of the Church of the Virgin Mary in Bani Wellmes of Al Minya, Egypt, is the newest site of religious violence. The brand new church was stormed by tens of armed Muslims who set it on fire along with thirty five houses and three cars, leaving 10 Copts wounded. Two buses carrying parishioners from the church of St. George (Heliopolis, Cairo) to the consecration ceremony were also attacked by the villagers. It took the local police over 4 hours to arrive to the scene and Muslim villages were seen preventing the fire trucks from entering the village to extinguish the fire inside the Church.

The necessary process of obtaining a construction permit from the president averages over 20 years of red tape. And yet the Hamayoni Decree enables the Muslim public to destroy churches that actually survived this process using the excuse that these churches were illegally built. Thus, February tenth is the fate of the Church of the Virgin Mary, its priest and its parishioners. True to form the Egyptian government has once again blamed the victim for the aggression. To alleviate their responsibility, on 02/11/2002 the Egyptian government arrested the church priest, Fr. Luka Ibrahim Sargious, and he is now being questioned on the charge of firing a hunting rifle.

The same tactic was employed by the Egyptian government in the early days of the Al-Kosheh massacre that left 21 Christians dead. They arrested and accused Father Ghobrial of the illegal possession of a firearm. Although the accusations against Father Ghobrial have been found to be false, the charges have not been dropped and are always brought forth for intimidation purposes. “No matter how the government attempts to spin the situation, what priest would interrupt a liturgy, exit a church during its opening ceremony and go fire a hunting rifle at Muslim youth who just happened to be standing out side with gasoline bombs”, said Michael Meunier, president of the U.S. Copts Association.

Yet the Interior Ministry said as the official government response "Elements from both sides, Muslim and Christian, overreacted." With no accountability and certainly no action for future prevention let alone prosecution for current criminals, why should Muslim treat Christians with anything but violence in a country where the president must personally grant any permission for church constructions? The Christian community in and outside of Egypt has repeatedly asked President Mubarak to treat the construction of places of worship in Egypt equally, whether they are Islamic or Christian, if only to send a message of acceptance and tolerance among all Egyptians. Yet President Mubarak seems to ignore all pleas to send a message of tolerance and acceptance to his people and grant the Egyptian Christians the rights to build their Churches. No wonder Christians in Egypt will continue to be abused under President Mubarak’s regime.

Worth repeating:
No wonder Christians in Egypt will continue to be abused under President Mubarak’s regime.

Its ironic that these people, whose liturgy is said in a form of ancient Egyptian and represent the aboriginal inhabitants of Egypt have to suffer persecution from this damnable mob of camel-driving followers of the mad prophet.

OUR government should demand that these Islamic states stop persecuting or allowing the persecution of Christians and ALL non-Islamic faiths in their countries.

President (Dictator) Mubarak is due to visit Washington where he is going to say a bunch of lies about how Egypt is a good ally of the US, and how he deserves the usual $2 billions of US aids to feed his hungry/angry/worthless people. For the life of me, I cannot understand why our government pays this hefty some of money without extracting real deliverable from the Egyptian government.

Egypt must treat its minorities with respect. It is obvious here, that the Egyptian government itself, with its laws systematically oppress and discriminate against the indigenous people of Egypt, the Christian Copts. The Copts represent 15-20% of the population, and receive no proportional representation. Why do you need a permission from the President of the country to build or repair a church? How come it is easy for Moslems to come here and open a mosque any where without suffering similar discrimination to what they do to Christians. As a matter of fact, we have more right to discriminate against them, and against their mosques! Because they use the mosques as center for organization of terror against us. On the other hand, the Christian churches in Moslem countries was never used to oppose the regimes of these countries.

It would be nice if FreePers send an e-mail to Mr. Bush asking him for specific requirements from Mr. Mubarak in return of us feeding his worthless people. Something like Freedom of religion! If a Moslem convert to Christianity don’t kill him. We have lots of Christians converting to Islam here freely. Friendship must be a two way street. I hope that Bush have more guts than his predecessors in extracting real changes from Egypt. After all, Egypt Media is government controlled, and its clerics are government employees; both spew venomous hate against us and Israel, on a daily basis. The American Government needs to wake up. 25% of the terrorists were Egyptian Moslems, stop giving Egyptian Moslems visas! Insist to Mubarak, change your hostility, and bias, or go feed your people on your own!

He, (Mubarak,) is too busy protecting his own hindquarters. He has played both sides against the middle for so long, he's schizoid.

We can't play dome anymore! These bastered orchestrated an econmic loss to this country in the range of 1/2 trillion dollars. We must dictate to them to stop the hate preaching of their clerics and media.

Just beared repeating.
Good quote and should be taken to heart by people in the USA who think Muslims are
moving to the USA to become average US citizens.
They (at least too many of them) are here to colonize.

Isn't this just how it goes everytime? The Jihading jerks commit criminal and provocative acts and Christians, Jews, Hindus, whomever defend their life and property and all of a sudden the conflict is given a relativistic spin.
