Calif. Libertarian For Governor Statement
Calif. Official Voter Guide ^ | February 2002 | Gary Copeland

Posted on 02/06/2002 7:05:19 AM PST by ZGuy

I am the CEO of a bio-information company, husband/father, and a practicing Druid Unitarian. Capitalism is taking dreams and ideas and turning them into reality. I’m running for Governor for my childrens’ futures and the future of California. I want to rally individuals to secure liberty and happiness. The only proper realm of government is the protection of our lives, liberty and property from criminals and foreign invaders. Other functions violate our rights and make us dependent on government. Libertarians trust individuals to make decisions about their lives. Let’s support the vision of our founding fathers.

Libertarian statement: we are running, not to win, but to deny the GOP candidate any chance of winning, assuring the Democratic nominee of victory, because we are so myopic we can not tell a Republican from a Democrat, and because despite our stated goals, we are counter-productive and want the person elected to be the one who holds the most divergent position on the issues in relation to ours. And BTW, we're vegetarians.....

In other words, the Republicans are happy a Libertarian is running, because now they have someone to blame their failures on.

Here's a weird idea for the GOP: try to win, instead of hunting for excuses. Mobilize some voters, maybe by coming up with a campaign slogan other than, "Vote Republican, we're not as bad as you think" or "Watch us out-spend the Democrats". Given that if 50% of the electorate shows up it's considered a "high turnout" it seems to me there should be plenty of voters out there for you to win--more than enough to offset any alleged loss to the LP candidate.

Besides, you guys are always telling us how "liberal" we are. Why in hell would we vote GOP if that's true?

"The only proper realm of government is the protection of our lives, liberty and property from criminals and foreign invaders."

Sounds like a big government scheme to me; whats wrong with private security?

Run better, more constitutionally inclined candidates and you'll get our votes. Ron Paul (R) for example, would easily take the libertarian vote from the LP.

If not, (and we know you won't), then don't complain if you lose.

It's just that easy.

A scheme?

What suitable role do you see for government?

Surely we are civilized enough to rise above an existance of the strong preying on the weak.

In a time of need, my neighbor should hope for my help, not fear my attack.
