"The religious aspect (of the crucifix) doesn't really bother me, and I'm Jewish," Karen Mendelson said. "But I just don't like things sticking up in the air. And at 25 stories, it's going to be absurd looking." I'm Jewish and I believe in private property.
It's the man's own money and property. The only public issue is whether the statue is structurally sound.
Whether I like looking at it is irrelevant.
Just plain none of my business.

I was never a FLAG WAVER nor one to wear my religion on my sleeve. Guess what? I now have a large flag in front of my home, on my SUVS and I wear a flag with a cross on my caps, (courtesy of the Rev. Dr, James Kennedy). Any SOB who's offended will be more offended when I punch them in the nose.

I'm sure the people who advertise the "World's Largest Crucifix" in Indian River, Michigan can't be happy about this.

Tom Monaghan is a great guy. He has my vote.

There is a cross erected on top of a hill in southern Illinois, near Cobden and Alto Pass, Illinois. It is on the 2nd highest elevation in the state. You can see it for miles. It is especially beautiful at night when it is lighted and appears to float in the air, as you can't see the hill it is on. It is called "Bald Knob Cross," and I don't think anyone there, or who sees it, would ever consider complaining about it. It is one of my favorite places to see. BSW

"I'm a Methodist, but this will offend people in this multireligious area." If worried about offending other religions I guess we will have to tear down the steeples on many churches that have the cross atop them too.

"It's outrageous!" said Patricia Blom, whose lives about a half-mile from Domino's Farms. "I'm a Methodist, but this will offend people in this multireligious area." I'm not RC either, but I'm not offended. I like the idea of a simple cross, but hey, it's not my money..........
.......and you'll see more 'offensive' things on the TV any given day of the week.

I live in Michigan, therefore I have known Mr. Monaghan and I have eaten his pizza for years. It is decent, considering it is chain restaurant pizza.
Anyway, I have been near his Domino Farms estate, it is along US 23 in Ann Arbor, MI. The guy is a crackpot. He has buffalo roaming around, and all kinds of other things there. Huge spot lights, and stuff. It is the Michigan version of Neverland or MC Hammer's house.
Regardless, anyone in Michigan who is Catholic knows the coolest big cross in Michigan is at Indian River, MI, better known as "The Cross in the Woods." That 55 foot high cross includes a giant 7 ton bronze sculpture of Christ by Marshall Fredericks (the same guy who sculped the Spirit of Detroit and that one sculpture in Cleveland). There is a nearby "Nun Doll Museum" which has like hundreds of dolls wearing just about every nun habit in existence. It is a very neat place and I encourage all RCs (heck, I encourage all people) to go see it if you ever have the chance. The local diocese there just built a church there with a huge window where you can look out and see the cross (mass used to be held outdoors).
Pizza Tom is just trying to build one closer to Detroit, I think. Indian River is several hours away.
PS The Tigers were much better when Monaghan owned them. But, true Tiger fans know that it was John Fetzer's organization that built the 1984 team.

The proposed crucifix has drawn mixed reactions. Some people don't like seeing a body on that cross. It is the Body that saved us, not the wood.

"I'm a Methodist, but this will offend people in this multireligious area."Nicly done...this sentence has all the correct left-wing keywords, in exactly all the right places.
Offensive, the blanket excuse for taking away more and more and more of our national culture every day.

I wonder what he'll do with the buffalo herd..
Somehow I'm not sure they'll fit in w/ the new architectural decor..

"The religious aspect (of the crucifix) doesn't really bother me, and I'm Jewish," Karen Mendelson said. "But I just don't like things sticking up in the air. And at 25 stories, it's going to be absurd looking." People said much of the same thing when the Eiffel Tower was being planned. It would block the view, it would be ugly and inconvenient. If this cross is built and becomes a cultural attraction that brings in tourists, you won't be able to find a person who was originally opposed to it.
That being said, building this cross is a great idea.

Mr. Monaghan puts a up a very Chisto-centric (Christ -centered) Christmas light display with 3 million lights along this same highway. He calls it the "St. Nicholas Light Display". People pay $9/car to drive through it up close and he raises thousands of dollars for charities - many of which are not Catholic.
