Sen. Helms May Endorse Liddy Dole This Week at CPAC
The National Journal and The Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer ^ | Saturday January 26, 2001 | 'Weekend Scoop' Political Tip Sheet Staff

Posted on 01/26/2002 9:02:04 AM PST by umbra

Senator Jesse Helms (Republican-NC) 'has steadfastly avoided taking sides' in past GOP primaries, but he 'is about to bend his rule some--if not outright break it.'

Helms is scheduled to address CPAC on 1/31, and he 'has invited Elizabeth Dole to introduce him.'

Helms apparently plans to 'lavish her with praise.'

Helm's spokesman Jimmy Broughton 'wouldn't say whether Helms plans to endorse Dole, suggesting: 'Stay Tuned.'

One of Dole's GOP rivals, atty Jim Snyder,: "All this pomp and circumstance is to expected for someone who's been in Washington for so long.'

"Her only position of great concern was her strong pro-gun control stance, but she has smartly moderated it in preparation of representing her largely pro-gun Republican constituents."

And you trust her? What makes you think she isn't just a liberal in reality - who will quit pretending being anything else the day after elected?

I'd rather have a flaming liberal for one term - who won't be able to get anywhere with Bush - than another McCain who will hold the GOP hostage with constant threats to defect.

Liddy Dole's recent voter registration: is it illegal?

"No. Giddy has been given Helm's Senate seat by both the NC-GOP,and the RNC. She has the full support of both organizations, and this makes her unbeatable in the primaries."

sneakypete,
I agree, and because of such, the NC-GOP and RNC will offend many of the TRUE North Carolinians who KNOW and LIVE the problems of the people of this state day after day.
Dolt has no concept of what effect a plant closing in NC has on OUR families. Yet these goons keep hammering "Globalism" while they shatter our society with each tap. What will she do? Absolutely nothing but "play dead" with the rest of the act. The way RNC and NC-GOP can reach the conservative Dems - and we will certainly need their help to hold Helms seat - is to ALIGN and ACCENT a Repub candidate's association with/to the average voter's concerns. Dolt HAS NO ABILITY TO BE THIS ONE. For the RNC/NC-GOP to endorse her instead of polishing a genuine North Carolinian candidate proves just how far from truly representing the people these parties have gone, and from what I hear, only serves to fuel and enforce the Conservative Democrats' (CD's) long held view of not being able to associate with the Republican party. We Republicans had best face the music - a Republican won't be returning to Washington if the candidate can't appeal to the average CD voter of NC....

Because you believe you can't stop a thing you see no virtue in slowing it down?

Why do you think voting for a socialist liberal republican is going to slow anything down?

If the republicans cannot find a suitable conservative candidate , I too say go third party. It make no difference if we get a democrat social liberal or another republican social liberal like Jaffords. Your just wasting your vote.

We Republicans had best face the music

First off,I am no longer a Republican. I resigned my party position, and am now a registered Independent. The Bush-Bots here on FR kept telling me that "you are not a TRUE Republican!",and the more I thought about it,the more I agreed with them. I refuse to join the cult of Bush merely because there is a "silent D" behind his name that is overwritten by a "R".

Secondly, the RNC and NC-GOP don't give a single DAMN about what is happening in NC. They are both entirely focused on the federal level. Giddy is a perfect example of this. She hasn't lived in NC since she was a puppy, and has never had a REAL job in her entire life. Every job she has ever had was the top slot, and she got them by sleeping with the right man. She IS a Republican version of Buh-Bette!.

As for her suddenly "discovering her conservative roots" goes, this is pure HorseHillary. The only roots she will ever find are gray ones when she needs to touch-up her dye job. She will JUMP at the first opportunity to join in with the Dims on things like gun control or gun bans, and will excuse this by saying something like "I think this is a reasonable compromise that doesn't really affect the rights of NC citizens to own guns. They can still own guns, but not all guns. In return,I got my beloved friends in the Dim party to agree to vote with us on a tax cut some time in the future. BTW,have you met my new collegue,Hillary? She's my idol!".

Well, obviously you don't have to be moderate to win in NC; look at who she's replacing. But Elizabeth Dole in particular is extremely popular in North Carolina, which is what some people here seem to be missing. I doubt that popularity will heavily erode over the course of 9 months, unless she does something monumentally stupid. Jim Hunt not running is what really helped seal the deal for Dole.

Sure, there's other people I'd rather have in there than Liddy, but the minute she decided to run, she became the Republican nominee. To all of you who insist she'll turn into Snowe on steroids, I guess we can only wait and see. I really don't think that's gonna happen, but we'll have to wait a year at the very least to find out.

BTW, I think she'll serve 2 terms. She'd be 78 after two terms, which isn't unreasonable at all considering how old many Senators are when they retire or die nowadays.

But Mrs. Dole's Beltway backers should be careful what they wish for, lest they end up with Jim Jeffords in a skirt"

Ahhh, if only we could get Michelle to run instead of Giddy! A genuine intellect who REALLY is conservative.

she described herself as 'a strong supporter of the Second Amendment,' and said the assault weapons ban appeared to have had little effect on crime and should not be extended or expanded until studied further. "She also said she would have 'no trouble supporting' North Carolina's concealed weapons law, which requires passing a gun safety test before being allowed to carry a concealed weapon and restricts where guns can be carried,"

Assault weapons should be banned, she argued, noting, correctly, that "you don't need an AK-47 to defend your family".

Sort of a little double speak here.
What does she mean by studied further?

"you don't need an AK-47 to defend your family"

But you may need one to defend your country.

While she will never be another Helms I will gladly take Libby Dole over the clintonite.

Not me. If I'm going to vote for a statist,I'm going to vote for one who is honest about it.

The thought of a Democrapic sweep is too much to bear!

It MIGHT be the wake-up call the Republicans so desperately need to hear. Even though the "leadership"(gag.puke) are leftists themselves, the thing they worship most of all is power. If they are ever forced to face up to the reality that they never reached majority status UNTIL Newt somehow managed to convince them to run AND legislate to the right, they deserve to have their asses handed to them on election day. Newt brought the party to power, and these insider bastards stabbed him in the back with a knife over a blow job.Or at least that is the excuse they needed. I'm becoming more and more convinced the real reason is they hate conservatives, and needed Newt out of them before he ruined it for leftists like themselves.

In that Robert J. Dole was a "war hero," why do you suppose he was so cowardly in dealing with Democrats in his long political career? Bravery in war does not translate to political courage!!!! In 1974, he stood four-square against abortion and nearly lost. In 1976, he spoke in debate with Walter F. Mondale of "Democrat wars." Afterwards, he seemed to turn cartwheels in support of Democrat spending plans, including George Stanley McGovern's food-stamp expansion. Why did the Republicans nominate him in 1996? Did they just feel sorry for him or what? Now, why in the world would NC want his liberal wife as the successor to Jesse Helms? It's because NC is much more liberal than it was just ten years ago, due to the influx of northern liberals.

I'm sorry, Sneakypete, but Newt Gingrich was no role model for any conservative. After he attacked Robert J. Dole as a "tax-collector for the welfare state," Gingrich himself voted time and time again for the expansion of that same welfare state. After the evil way that Gingrich attacked Pat Buchanan in the 1996 primaries, he split his britches with me. However, I must say, he does a good job in his occasional Fox News commentaries. It's too bad he didn't follow that commentary line when he was Speaker. Instead he was out trying to convert Katie Couric and other liberals to his new liberal brand of Republicanism. Well Katie is still announcing with a big fat contract, and Newt, still unable to settle on one woman, is mostly forgotten.

It's sad when Dole is seen as conservative. Apparently CPAC is now left of center.

I'm sorry, Sneakypete, but Newt Gingrich was no role model for any conservative.

Don't confuse religious bigotry/morality with being a "conservative". They are not only different things, they are oppossing forces.

After he attacked Robert J. Dole as a "tax-collector for the welfare state,"

Correct in every detail. Dolt WAS a Dim who only ran as a Republican becuase that was the only way he could get elected.

grich himself voted time and time again for the expansion of that same welfare state.

Examples,please. Examples IN CONTEXT.

evil way that Gingrich attacked Pat Buchanan in the 1996 primaries, he split his britches with me.

Maybe for you,but most of us saw Pat as being a monkey wrench on a ego trip to enrich himself. I see no evidence to make me change my mind about this. Pat DESERVED to be attacked for the isolationist idiot he is.

ust say, he does a good job in his occasional Fox News commentaries. It's too bad he didn't follow that commentary line when he was Speaker.

He did. His problem was the left wing of the DimRep party were busy stabbing him in the back.

was out trying to convert Katie Couric and other liberals to his new liberal brand of Republicanism.

You shouldn't post while drunk.

and Newt, still unable to settle on one woman, is mostly forgotten.

Here we go. The biggest problem you have with him is based on this, and nothing else. You are mad because he got a blow job. It's people like you who are responsible for Clinton getting away with the REAL crimes he committed while president, because you focused on and demanded the Republican Party focus on the blow jobs. This gave the Dims the cover they needed to scream "It's all about sex!".

Isn't it true that when "Liddy" (she is said to despite this sobriquet) was registered to vote in NC, she was "Democrat"? Then she switched to please "her Bob." Is her mother Democrat or Republican? Did anyone see that silly dance she did with the sorority sisters in her "presidential" campaign of late 1999? It does seem like more than two years ago, right?

Sneakypete, the batter back and forth is fun. You said that I "shouldn't post while drunk." Well, I don't drink and have never been drunk. I know you won't believe that any more than I will believe that Newt Gingrich was a worthy conservative role model.

Well, Sneakypete, now you are accusing conservatives of responsibility for letting bILLclinton off the hook on impeachment. Why don't you accuse Trent Lott, Arlen Specter, Slade Gorton, Orrin Hatch (hesitant to pursue the matter) instead? Of course, even if all Republicans had voted for conviction, the rascal would have still escaped removal by 12 votes. So the "trial" was a non-starter from the start. But the opportunity could have been used to expose all the scandals to which you have referred. Instead Trent & Co. just ran for cover. It was an embarrassing GOP performance, and we must admit that.
