Sen. Helms May Endorse Liddy Dole This Week at CPAC
The National Journal and The Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer ^ | Saturday January 26, 2001 | 'Weekend Scoop' Political Tip Sheet Staff

Senator Jesse Helms (Republican-NC) 'has steadfastly avoided taking sides' in past GOP primaries, but he 'is about to bend his rule some--if not outright break it.'

Helms is scheduled to address CPAC on 1/31, and he 'has invited Elizabeth Dole to introduce him.'

Helms apparently plans to 'lavish her with praise.'

Helm's spokesman Jimmy Broughton 'wouldn't say whether Helms plans to endorse Dole, suggesting: 'Stay Tuned.'

One of Dole's GOP rivals, atty Jim Snyder,: "All this pomp and circumstance is to expected for someone who's been in Washington for so long.'

Any NC Freepers going to CPAC?

I was trying to work out a way to make it, but it's just not going to happen.

Liddy Dole is a gun grabbing, pro-abortion, RINO.

How can NC go from Jesse Helms to a RINO?

Liddy has done the appropriate mea culpa on abortion and the gun issue and has said that 'she wants to be senator like Jesse Helms' -that's good enough for my support

Liddy has taken back the anti-gun stance on assault weapons and is not pro choice.

I wouldn't vote for Dole in the primary(I'd back Jim Snyder), but I'd probably hold my nose in the general. I wouldn't be voting for Dole, who is just like her husband on guns(not a compliment). I would be voting though against Tom Dashale as majority leader, Pat Leahy on judiciary, Chuck SCUMer as a subcommitte that all judges must get past, and Carl Lenin on Armed Services committee.

If nothing else, at least Dole would not back Levin, Leahy, SCUMer, and Daschale. If the GOP takes back the senate, at least then SOME of the bad legislation would be bottled up in committee.

Sort of like Algore in reverse? Algore got straight A ratings from the NRA while he was a Senator for TN, but became a rabid anti-gunner once he ran for national office. Frankly, I don't trust Liddy's conversion to stick. When it becomes politically expedient to vote for gun control she will. She may be better than a Dem, but not much.

No big surprise. Of course Jesse Helms wants to endorse the person who will be his successor, even if they don't agree all the time. No one really has a chance against her in the primaries, and she will very likely win the general race.

Her only position of great concern was her strong pro-gun control stance, but she has smartly moderated it in preparation of representing her largely pro-gun Republican constituents. A lot of people here seem to think she is pro-choice, which is not true. She is pro-life (with the whole rape/incest/mother's life exception), but she has said she doesn't want to make it an issue, so you can take that as you will. I'm fairly certain she would vote for a PBA ban and against public funding, which is really what's important anyway.

There's not a chance that as a senator, Dole would be a RINO of the Specter/Snowe/Collins variety. She will probably support Bush a large majority of the time.

For election purposes maybe... She changes sides too easily which tells me she has no opinion of her own and will go with the flow. There are too many RINO's in our government now. We don't need more.

Frankly, I don't trust Liddy's conversion to stick.

Conversion? Nope. She will say whatever to get power. She has not converted at all from her basic principle of get power at any price.

So lets elect a woman of no principles to make laws for us. That will be great. She is a useless lifetime politician. She has based her life on working for an institution whose existance is owed to forcing people to fund it. She has consistantly supported government growth and the idea that government is a good entity for society and not a parasite. I'll have nothing to do with her. She like most Republicans will say whatever they think will get them elected so they can enjoy the power and prestige of being a Senator in the most powerful coercive force the world has ever known.

That was last month. This month she's a rock-ribbed pro-gun anti-abortion conservative reactionary.

I haven't gotten her schedule for next month yet.

How can NC go from Jesse Helms to a RINO?

It's a country-wide phenomenon. Areas we thought were reliably conservative are going mushy on us.

"Liddy Dole is a gun grabbing, pro-abortion, RINO."

You are lying.

I wish he was. During the nomination process in 2000 for the presidential run, she stated she saw no reason for anyone to be allowed to own an assault rifle, and was staunchly anti-conceal carry. I am less sure of her abortion views, but I think I recall her saying some pro-choice cliches here or there...

Great. So we know at least she doesn't operate from her principles, but is willing to change her deeply held beliefs long enough to get elected.

No thanks.
